N doesn't matter. I've even driven in the states when I had my L. When I asked the border guard if I was allowed to drive, she asked, "is your license valid?". I said well, yeah. And she was all like "well then you're good to go".

Course, my dad was in the car due to BC driving laws, but apparently in the states it doesn't matter.
