1) Install Win 7 from the DVD you download and burn.
2) Don't provide a CD key; you'll be running the Win7 Ultimate 30 day trial.
3) take out the DVD, restart
4) boot up, and put in the DVD. Run the Upgrade program, this time provide your CD key.
5) tada, you now have a full version of Win7, off a clean install.

Would i need format my computer first?

I'm still running XP 32bit. If i want to go 7 - 64bit.

This process will completely format your computer (ie a fresh install) as it's a workaround from the fact that what you get from Microsoft is an "Upgrade"

so make sure you have everything you want saved onto a external hard drive so you don't lose everything
