| LCD problems
I bought a toshiba 52" back in april of 08 at visions. didnt get the extended warranty
about 3 months ago, the right side of the screen, about 1/3, goes white or black. i would proceed by turning the tv off then back on and it would be fine. it happened maybe once or twice a night, and gradually got worse. this only happened when i was watching my pvr or tv.
last week, it progressed to happening with whatever video source i was using, so its not a problem with a faulty pvr box.
i proceeded to bring it to the repair shop in richmond on alderbridge and No 3 Rd. they called me back that the panel needs to be replaced.
my question is, would they be fucking me around? or is this a common problem. i mean the tv is only 2.5 years old, how can this happen right?
If the panel does need to be replaced, i would probably be better off buying a new tv right?what should i do with the old one? just throw it away?
Also, if i have to buy a new TV, any suggestions on brand or model #? looking to spend no more than 1800 before tax.
any help would b great
thanks

first, check the manufacturer site to see if there are any recalls. second, look online to see if this is a common problem or something, and if anyone has a "quick fix" or something like that.

the cost to replace the panel is over 2K
there are no recalls, ive read more than a handful of the same complaints of owners with the same model. every complaint that ive read has occured between 18 and 26 months after purchase so there is definitely something faulty with this model. toshiba wont do shit since the 1 yr manufacturers warranty is over

How long is the manufacturer's warranty? If you bought it on a credit card then the warranty is automatically doubled, up to 1 extra year, by the credit card company.

manufacturers warranty is only 1 yr... tv was bought and paid for with cash.
well, talked to the repair shop .. since its gonna cost 2K+, any suggestions on a new tv? preferably 1800 or less before taxes. looking for 52 or 55 inch lcd.
should i stay away from toshiba period? or was the panel damage just a fluke?

i had a 46" sony LCD that randomly gets a black line in the middle of the screen.
This happened only 2 months after I got the TV...similar to your problem, the black line is gone after I shut it down and turn it back on.
After a few service call with sony, a repair guy came in and replaced the panels...and the problem went away.
funny thing is, I had a chat with the repair guy and he told me they charges sony over a $1000 to do the repair (parts & labor)...but the same TV cost only $800 brand new
apparently, the LCD panel itself costs more than the entire TV..
well..i guess that's just the way manufacturer rip off cust.

as far as a new TV, I'd pick up a Samsung. I haven't been in the market for a while but they've always been a safe bet for getting an exceptional screen.
it may have been a fluke problem with the design of the TV, if possible I'd hold onto it for a while (if you have the room to store it someplace) and make sure the broken unit is registered with Toshiba as broken. In some cases (I know Sony has done this with some TV's) the manufacturer will extend the warranty due to a model being widely faulty outside of the regular warranty.

that's why for the future it doesnt hurt to make electronic purchases through your CC
not that it would be covered since it's already past 2 years
doesn't surprise me that the panel is worth as much as the TV
