I think it's not just the fact that they're speaking english, nor canto fluently. Like some of you said, there are tons of young people growing up in countries not native to their parents origins. Those are the effects of globalization.

the funny thing about these guys is how they accurately get the chinglish accents and mannerisms and cross between them... kind of like a beta version of Russell Peters 2.0.

They were born and raised there, of course they have the same mannerisms.

I saw people like this all over the place on my trip to Xian, Beijing and Shanghai back in May... thank goodness too cuz I can't speak a lick of mandarin

its just the novelty that makes it interesting. i'm sure if we heard white guys speaking chinese everyday we'd be indifferent... but the fact is, we live in an environment where we don't hence we find this interesting.

i saw a black guy speaking perfect mandarian (perfect tone) few months back on the bus, he works in beijing.... it was amazing!

once at beijing airport, i heard two foreigners speak to each other in mandarin but their accents were differnt, so i suppose mandarin was their common language.

en contraire, my friend, the main difficulty in languages is getting the phonetics right
if i remember correctly, english has 1 tone, mandarin has 5, and cantonese has 9, so it is actually remarkably more difficult for a native english speaker to learn cantonese than for a cantonese speaker to learn english

(its also harder for mandarin people speaking cantonese to lose the accent than it is for cantonese people speaking mandarin to lose the accent)

What is the difference between that and all of the Chinese people born here in Canada that speak perfectly fluent English? Nothing... absolutely nothing. It is the exact same thing in reverse.

However, I must admit, if it were not for the fact that I took a trip to Hong Kong back almost ten years ago, this might not be that obvious to me either. But when I was over there, obviously I saw some white folks and East Indians there that spoke perfect Cantonese, and then it dawned on me that was perfectly normal and expected.

You guys are all idiots if you think its amazing and totally awesome dood. Just because their skin is WHITE doesn't mean they are any less chinese than the people they grew up with. This is HOW THEY WERE RAISED TO TALK. They didn't LEARN to talk this way AFTER growing up they were RAISED to talk this way. Whats more impressive to me is that they don't have an accent when they speak English.

English has a lot more than 1 tone, last time I checked. ;) Point taken though; I believe what you're trying to say is that English is a phonetic language (sound is important) while both Mandarin and Cantonese are phonetic + tonal. In other words, having any type of accent will throw off your meanings in Chinese but not in English.

i was just saying its harder for english speaker to learn cantonese than it is for cantonese speaker to learn english, i wasn't talking about them specifically.... nor their skin colour nor their grandaddies :rolleyes:
