Police officer hit by car in Richmond

Quote:
A Vancouver police officer is in hospital recovering from injuries suffered when he was hit by a car Wednesday while on traffic duty on Highway 99 in Richmond.

The officer was not seriously injured, Vancouver police said later.

The incident occurred about 4:30 p.m. PT in the northbound lanes at Blundell Road, said RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen..

The officer, who was working with the Integrated Road Safety Unit, was operating a radar speed trap in a construction zone when he was struck.

"He was attempting to flag over a violator [when] a second vehicle came up from behind, striking the violator vehicle causing it to strike the VPD officer," Thiessen said.

Two other police officers were working with the officer who was hit and all were wearing brightly coloured safety vests, said Thiessen.

The highway was closed while investigators worked at the scene.

Ezekiel 25:17. The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you.

okay this reminds me - the police seriously need to stop jumping out in front of cars to wave people over. it's frickin dangerous as hell and eventually somebody's gonna get hit. it wasn't mentioned in the article, but i wouldn't be surprised if that's what happened here.

Yeah it's retarded... and when it's raining, dark, and foggy in the winter - it takes just one lapse in attention to miss their "wave". Hell they don't even use lit batons (those orange lightsabres)!

Agreed! And this officer wasn't even hit by the vehicle that he flagged down (who saw him fully, BTW)...it was the vehicle behind that caused the hit.

This reminds me, one time a cop on Granville street radared me going over the speed limit at 65-68 km/h and suddenly jumped out to try and flag me down. The officer was barely visible and by time he/she tried to jump out flag me I would've had to slam on my brakes to actually stop and cause a rear fender bender accident (I was ahead leading a flow of traffic). In a split second, I just pretended I didn't see them and just kept going and turned at the first side street and zigzagged around the inside city blocks so they wouldn't catch me LOL.

Agree, they do that when it's foggy, raining, or sometimes in the dark too! I must admit that in my younger days, I actually thought it was a bum trying to attack/rob me... instincts made me hard brake and make a quick right hand turn. It wasn't until after I made that turn that I realized it was an officer. Let's just say I didn't want to see him afterwards.

I agree 100%, I see that this all the time at Rupert and 1st, at the Petro-Canada gas station. Usually one cop sits at the entrance of Petro to catch the cars that come out of the bus only lane onto Rupert. Since that part of Rupert is the highway offramp people coming off the hwy come down at like 70kms, and most of the time the cars coming out of the bus lane are trying to cross from the right lane to the left turn lane. SO the cop has to dodge traffic and flag the car which is now in the left turn lane. There was one time this fat cop was trying to get this Prius and almost go smoked by a f150... Also cops radar right under the grandview hwy overpass on hwy 1 which is dangerous as hell

ALSO

Integrated Road Safety Unit - IRSU

The Integrated Road Safety Unit, more commonly known as IRSU, was formed in 2004 and is made up of 110 traffic enforcement officers from the RCMP and Municipal Police agencies across the Province.

IRSU’s mandate;

- Harm reduction on BC roadways
- Conduct strategic traffic enforcement in high collision areas in order to reduce the number of serious injury and fatal collisions on BC roads
- Focus on seatbelt compliance, aggressive driving and impaired drivers – the three factors that contribute to most of the carnage on our roads (impaired driving is still the #1 criminal cause of death in Canada)
- Commercial Vehicle Enforcement
- Criminal Interdiction
- Assist Municipal and Provincial traffic enforcement units with strategic traffic enforcement operations
