Which version of Windows 7 do you have? If it's Starter then you're limited to 2GB. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...8VS.85%29.aspx

gars 08-13-2010 12:18 PM

it's Home Premium 64bit

and now with the extra ram, it's showing 3gb, instead of 6...

so when i install 4gb, it'll show 2, when i install 6, it'll show 3...

Is the RAM compatible with your board? Try a BIOS update.

gars 08-13-2010 01:01 PM

it's the most up to date bios... and I've never had this problem before...

this is basically an old build, but the PS died on me.... and now that i reinstalled windows 7 (had xp before), this is happening... it's super weird...

What was causing the problem?

Razor Ramon HG 08-13-2010 03:42 PM

I'm curious too.

syee 08-13-2010 05:15 PM

I'm guessing it's to do with the OS being 32 bit and the memory allocation for other devices.

mb_ 08-13-2010 05:18 PM

Probably a PEBKAC

gars 08-13-2010 10:38 PM

ummm... I didn't post the solution because I felt sooo stupid...

I originally thought my RAM was 2x2GB, but in reality.. it was actually 2x1GB.....

I spent all this time, and wasted all YOUR time for nothing. I really should just read the labels on the stick....

c_loke 08-14-2010 12:22 AM

bahaha. i was thinking it was a memory mapping issue.

terkan 08-14-2010 01:27 AM

but i thought in ur original post that you deleted.. u said cpu-z shows the 4gb while windows shows 2gb lol

mb_ 08-14-2010 02:49 AM

i was right! :troll::haha:

Don't be embarrassed. I'm sure most other techie's on here have done similar stuff. I've spent an afternoon searching for a solution as to why I couldn't find my fourth hard drive. I hooked it up, gave it power, but forgot to map it though windows afterwards.

gars 08-14-2010 09:35 AM

I was away from this computer for like 2 years... completely forgot how much Ram i had originally purchased.

I know it's pretty standard for computers 2 have 4gb ram, so I automatically assumed I had 4, not remembering that XP was around when I first bought this computer... and that I only had 2...

With dual channel memory kits it's quite easy to make a mistake, because some are marked with the capacity of the kit, not the stick. A 2GB kit can be marked with a 2GB label on each stick.
