eBook readers, what are your thoughts?

I'm thinking about grabbing an eBook reader to get my reading habits back into shape

Any of you guys have one, and what do you think?

Bought my wife one a few years ago.

Pros:
saves space
portable
free books if you download for torrents

Cons:
can't beat the feel of an actual book

I've heard that the Kindle is better for your eyes than any other, including iPad. Something about refresh rate on other devices hurt your eyes over time compared to the Kindle.

Yeah, not even considering the iPad.

Thinking about Kobo or Kindle, both are very good it seems.

I bought a Kindle DX just 3 days ago from Amazon

I havent been reading for this long since I was 15ish. 3-4 hours nonstop reading, and not even a little bit tired.

that's at 4am in the morning.

I'm waiting for an ebook reader that has some web browser capability too. When I was in Chapters, I saw them advertising one that they claimed has some web browsing capability, but I can't remember which one it is

Well I play on using it primarily as an ebook, but would like it to be internet browser capable for just light, occasional use (e.g. checking email when on holiday). ipad seems overkill for my intent

That makes sense, I thought you mean to surf the web on bed or something.

Occasional use is acceptable on eink, but web surfing is NOT a pleasant experience, especially after you are used to using computers.

Bad idea. The #1 problem with people who don't read anymore is: distractions!

My GF has a Kindle and she loves it. I have been skeptical cause of the price, at $399 there was noway I'd ever buy one. Now with the Wifi only version for $140 USD I'm sold. I plan to grab one next month in the US.

I have read on a tablet before and it sucks. The backlit screen is hard on your eyes, especially when it is dark.

if you are planning on reading mainly kindle books, the Kindle 3 will do fine, but if you also need to read PDFs, especially scanned PDFs, Kindle 3 won't cut it.

6 inch is just too small for pdf.

I'm assuming Kindle would have access to the biggest collection of books?

I have a sony touch e-book reader and I love it to bits. I'm stuck at a comp all day for work so the LAST thing I want to do is read my books on a backlit monitor (like an Ipad or a netbook).

The e-ink really gives you the experience of looking at a page in a book. For an avid reader it pays itself off really quickly too. On average I read three to four books a month and I save about $5-10 a book (I read a lot of non fiction which doesn't come in cheap paperbacks) so I save myself $20-40 a month. The other handy thing is your book is never out of stock. If kobo or one of the other ebook sellers carries it you can get it when you want it.

I actually picked mine up initially when I was travelling a bit but packing very light, that way I could pack like 10 books in the space of less than 1 and not eat up my very limited baggage space. I think if you 1. travel a lot or 2. read a fair bit they're definitely worth while. For very light/casual readers not nearly as much.

On any of the readers that use e-ink there is no "refresh rate" it holds a steady image on the 'page'. That's the advantage of e-ink over using something like an ipad.

Yes. Yet serious readers don't consider magazines "reading".

The iPad is good for magazines, cookbooks, kids books, and reference/text books/manuals cause it incorporates colour, quick indexing/search, and even other multimedia like videos and walk throughs. Yet one would argue if these are really "books" anymore.
