I am a dog person, not a cat person, so I am admittedly biased.
I was going to fail you, but then saw your next post. There's two cats in my neighbourhood that roam the streets. One of them always chills in my backyard. One day it was sitting on the hood of my truck. It saw me and lazily got off, or tried to. It didn't jump off, but slid down the fender putting scratch marks on the paint. Right there and then, in the heat of the moment, I wanted to douse the fokker in paint thinner and light it on fire. Of course, being a Buddhist, I would never do that, but the thought was there albeit for a brief moment.

We had a cat problem in my neighbourhood in Ottawa. One cat would roam and sleep on cars or hang out on decks. While not that big a deal, waking up to our dog barking at the cat is not fun.

Solution: bucket of water. Plus my car got a rinse at the same time, win-win. Cat did not come back the very next day.

As for failing the $18K comment. My mother had a kennel and we bred pure-bred show dogs. I had 2 indoor dogs and several outdoor dogs as pets. Yet they were pets, not family. If something happened to one, we just kept a dog from the next litter. I'll never understand spending $Ks on a pet - then again, I don't understand the people who buy their dogs outfits or the crazy cat people who little the internet with stupid cat photos.

That's interesting - you're a dog person, but you didn't consider your dogs part of your family? Maybe it's because you had so many...

Family is human, pets are animals. I would not take $18K away from my family to spend on a pet.

I'm not a pet person, so it may be hard for me to see it the same point of view as pet owners.
But 18k is a lot. You can't compare a human (family member) with a pet animal.
It's not the same. A human has way more potential than a cat or dog.

I can understand paying a few grand to save a pet you really love, but more than that would seem ridiculous,
only because you can replace it, and possibly even one that looks very similar with a similar personality, unlike replacing a human.

flame suit on.

The cost thing is totally subjective... it doesn't even matter whether the subject is human or an animal... it all depends on how close or important the subject is to you, and whether the cost is worth it.

If it $18,000 to have a 10% chance of recovery, would you spend it to save your cat? What about to save your sister? Your mother?

Now what if it was $1,000,000 to have a 10% chance of recovery?

Ex-fucking-actly.

Too many cat owners think it's their cat's right to roam the neighborhood free. Guess fucking what people? Your fucking cat is TRESPASSING.

Some people I know up island have some acreage with 3 dogs: 2 German shepherds and a Malamute. Their property is completely fenced. One day a neighbors cat decided to come into the yard, the dogs killed it. A little while later "lost cat" signs were posted in the neighborhood. Of course the dog owners called the number and explained what happened, the cat owners weren't happy but there was nothing they could do, their fucking cat entered the fenced property. I think after that the cat owners were more careful to keep an eye on where their subsequent cats were going.

First, I'd put the dog out.

Second, I would hunt down the person and pour gas on them, smoke a fattie and toss the butt at them.

Third, if the dog was hurt beyond what could be treated within reason, it would be put out of its misery, shot, then buried in a marked grave along with the few other dogs in my parent's backyard.

This will sound awful to those who humanize their pets, yet pets are replaceable. I had enough dogs to know that within reason they are more or less the same once trained.

Would you spend $Ks saving your goldfish, or just buy another for $0.30? People all draw lines, and different lines. I draw mine at family/pet, not dog/goldfish.

It doesn't. It cost that much to try and save it, but in the end it was all for not and the cat succumbed to the injuries.

keep your pet indoors. i don't condone animal cruelty, but after you have a cat take a nap on your hood, you see things a little skewed.

as sad as this story is, i also find it weird the single mother would spend 18k to try and heal the cat... shes jeopardizing her family's financial needs/well-being for a pet... gotta set your priorities straight lady

$18,000 divided by $400 is 45. Thats possibly a year and a half (45 credits) worth of education for her kids, but no, who needs a university education? I fucking love cats!

but does anyone have realistic figures of how much vets make GVR?
i always thought they'd be making 200k+ gross considering how hard it is to get your training done..and it sure doesn't seem saturated in vancouver.

how accurate is this scale if someone knows? it seems to cap off just around 90-100k

Even though I loved my cat, and doggy sitting my friends german sheppard, I agree with you 100%

also, every animal I've seen come back from the vet (various doctors) Is usually f'd up afterward anyway. Its sometimes more cruel to let the animal live. (that can go for the dude that did this)

wow poor cat, that sucks. Well here's something to brighten the mood....

Warning: The following post contains graphic images. If you are offended by the sight of food-dye, corn syrup, and ground beef, you may not want to read this.
Original ad:
Humane "hav a heart" traps for kittens needed
There are some kittens in my neighborhood that need to find good homes. I need a trap 4 the cats to help bring them in. Please email me if you have a trap (and a heart)!

From Me to *********@********.org:

Hello,

Are you still looking for a trap for cats?

Mike

From Deb ******* to Me:

Yes I am can you help me?

From Me to Deb *******:

I most certainly can! I believe this trap is for those who want to "have a heart." I used it to catch a stray cat that kept coming into my garage. It is called the KittyHugger. All you have to do is put some cat food on the trigger, and when the cat comes to eat it, the trap gently contracts into a hugging position and comfortably hugs the cat until you come back to deal with the little guy. Please let me know if this will work.

Mike

From Deb ******* to Me:

Mike- I have never heard of a trap like that. I was referring to the "Havahart" traps...you know like the cages for animals?? Do you have any pictures of the trap? I'd like to see how it works before I get it. Thanks.

From Me to Deb *******:

Absolutely. I've attached a picture of it. Sorry if it is a little messy; I haven't cleaned the trap in a while.

From Deb ******* to Me:

YOU'RE SICK!

From Me to Deb *******:

Excuse me?

From Deb ******* to Me:

You killed that poor cat OMG

From Me to Deb *******:

I didn't kill the cat. I told you it was a little messy. The last cat I caught knocked over the bowl of juice I gave him so he wouldn't get thirsty. As you can see, it made quite the mess. I assure you this trap is 100% safe and humane.

From Deb ******* to Me:

IT OBVIOUSLY IS NOT SAFE. IT IS COVERED IN BLOOD

From Me to Deb *******:

You've clearly never seen a juice spill before. You have a twisted imagination if you think that is blood. I guess you don't want the trap.

Before you give up on me, I have one more trap you may be interested in. I actually think it is one of those Have a Heart traps you were talking about, though I've never heard it called that.

Please see the attachments. As you can see from the pictures, the kitty will have plenty of room to be safe and comfortable. It comes with a black tube at the end that is used to pump warm air into the cage to keep him warm while he waits to be released.

I'm sorry I didn't have time to clean the trap. It is still a little messy because the last cat I had in there spilled his bowl of juice and his cat food. It went everywhere!

Mike

From Deb ******* to Me:

Wow can't you read the ad you sick jerk? I DON'T WANT TO KILL THEM

How you managed to turn that trap into a bloody mess is a mystery to me but keep the hell away from me!!!
