Sockeye Salmon Opening on the Fraser

Hasn't happened since 2005/2006. People thought the river was dead with little to no returns for five years. This year, the DFO has opened up the Fraser.

Best sockeye around. Anyway, they are selling fresh sockeye at Sapperton Landing today. I just picked up a few dozen. Rigor was just setting in, so it's about as fresh as it gets. Four or five boats were there this afternoon. Going rate is 3 bucks a pound round. and $3.50 a pound, dressed.

Average size was around 4.5 to 7 pounds each fish.

Marine Stewardship Certified.

That means the boats are catching and selling legally. It also means the boats follow guidelines for food safety. In the past, I have bought sockeye from the natives and boy some of the practices make you wonder. If you are into fresh, this is the best you can buy.

The opening was for five hours today. Two of the boats still had the fish in the nets. Oh yeah, on a side note, there was this cute fisherman's daughter helping out. She had waiters on and very little........ Gawd, I gotta stop doing this shit.... such a pervert, I am.

Anyway, these fisherman have had it tough over the last little while, if you have a craving for BBQ salmon this weekend, help these guys out and have a great meal at the same time.

Speaking of bbq-ing salmon, does anyone know where to buy cedar planks for grilling? I know Costco sold them at one point earlier this year, but I haven't been looking for the planks when I've went.

Try Summit Tools (Boundary and 1st Ave.). I know that sounds weird, but they had them the last time I went a few days ago.

It's probably gone by now. Just keep checking craigslist. Never used to be on craigslist, but I guess this one particular fisherman is with the times. There are all kinds of people selling sockeye salmon on craigslist, but do be careful. Some people will sell you previously frozen stuff without telling you. There are people selling sockeye from up north too.

I'm not sure when the next opening is. DFO makes the decision when their test fisherman come back with the numbers.

There's native only openings, commercial, and sport. The Adams River run is starting, so in the next few weeks there might be a lot of fish coming in.

The fish caught today were in damn good shape. The opening was right at the mouth of the Fraser. The fisherman just went 200 yards out from where they were moored and caught today's fish. As stated before, they were only allowed 5 hours to catch whatever. I don't think there was a quota. In the good old days, you would hear of greedy fisherman catching so much fish, their boats would be in danger of sinking, LOL.

I've been out catching my own every day since opening... Awesome run so far and I've caught my limit every day. Gonna have a nice stockpile for the winter.

Berz out.

fliptuner 08-19-2010 09:54 AM

Sent an email to the CL ad for him to email me directly when they're going out again, instead of searching CL daily, to find a date.

If someone is in the know please keep us updated.

Yup, lots of fish in the river. Limit of two a day is awesome.

and later on in the year, Albacore Tuna!

Yummy.........

I go to Steveston docks often, but now I know about Sapperton, I'll most likely go there for salmon. It's a lot closer for me. Steveston for shrimp and tuna, for sure.

SIDE NOTE
Everyone if you can, put your name down for the closure of Fish Farms. (not fish hatcheries).

Fish Farms are actually destroying fish populations in the fraser river, by destroying the spawn cycle, and also throwing drugs into the water.

More info, just search youtube. It is a serious matter... even though they opened it this year, it wont last long. They will have to close it again.

I've been fighting it too. The danger is so obvious, but the Liberals are ignoring the facts. They closed down fish farms in Europe. Our technology is not better.

In any case, the fish farms are not close to the Fraser is it? I know it causes problems wherever it is located, but immediate impact is on wild fish that spawn close by.

I started a thread on this subject last year and nobody here gave a rat's ass. It's a car site and environmental issues is not on people's minds. Except for you and me, my friend.

When I go to sushi places, I refuse to buy/eat farmed Atlantic salmon. Every chance I get, I let it be known I do not support it. Anyway.............. it's good to hear someone else here bring it to our attention.

Berzerker 08-20-2010 08:58 AM

Just finishes filleting and vacuum sealing the 4 socks my dad pulled out today. Caught our limit in about 30 mins and then just starting handing off the rod to our friends to help them limit out. 5 of us limited out in about an hour. Man it feels good to be on the river again. Hasn't been a run like this in about 5 years... just wish they would up the limit to 4 like it was last time :D

Berz out.

Chinook salmon are insane. The size of those guys and the power they have. They can grow pretty big as well.

Just got an email back from the guy who posted the CL notification.

He says they're planning to go out on Tuesday.

I'll post back when he confirms.

Great68 08-20-2010 12:14 PM

I Caught these in about 2 hours off of Bamfield a few weeks ago:

http://www3.telus.net/bryster/DSCN0095.JPG

I never really used to like salmon, or fish in general, but I'm developing more of a taste for it these days especially if I catch it myself.

fliptuner 08-20-2010 12:27 PM

WTF I was supposed to meet up with my boss there, at the beginning of the month. He was in a 22ft aluminum with a cuddy called "SeaHawg"

distanc3 08-20-2010 12:43 PM
