Buying Shaw Terminals from Craigslist

Hey guys,

Has anyone purchased a Shaw HD Terminal from Craigslist before? if so, how does the transferring procedure with Shaw work? is there anything else that a buyer should be worried about?

The seller needs to call shaw and let them know they are selling the box. Once it's taken off their account it can be set up by the buyer over the phone.

if you want to buy a shaw terminal off craigslist, before paying for it, ask for the serial number on the box and call in to shaw customer or tech support and ask them to verify the serial number to see whether the box is stolen or not and whether the guy you are buying from is the current owner of the box. even though the box is not listed as stolen but the guy you are buying from isn't the account holder of the box then you might run into some problems. just tell them you want to verify the serial number with shaw first and if they refuse to give it to you, then something is fishy :P

^^ that and also the DCT you are buying might be a PROMO DCT or a rental DCT people are selling.

Also if the PVR is not from SHAW (IE bought from say Calgary) even though SHAW can still add it to thier inventory they won't do it so they will make you buy one from them.

Sounds quite complicated. Is it worth the trouble to proceed further or am I better off buying it at retail price?

It's really not that complicated.

Get the serial number of the box from the seller. Call Shaw, tell them you're looking to buy it used, and you just want to confirm that the box is free and clear. If it is, you're good to go. Easy-peasy!

IDEALLY you want the seller to call and tell Shaw he's selling it, but I've managed to activate them before without that.

In addition to other concerns about the box being stolen, etc., Shaw won't activate a box for you if it's attached to account that owes money. My brother gave me his Shaw terminal once, and they wouldn't activate it for me, because he owed Shaw something like $300 (he moved to a new place that had Telus TV and didn't need the box or Shaw, so he just didn't bother paying them what he owed them).

Don't bother calling, just contact Shaw via chat at:

https://secure.shaw.ca/apps/secure/l...=shaw-chat-nan

and ask the rep to check the serial number.
