since it's a USB dongle, I'm sure it'll get ripped and dumped online as soon as the thing comes out.

10 points Sony's gonna disable USB mass storage support in the coming months if this thing actually works

Bro the usb has nothing to do with mass storage, its an eep rom , like a bios chip on ur mobo that can be flashed with firmware... Sadly we won't be able to download the dump and put it on any usb.. And ya all sony has to do is change the boot on ps3 so firmware loads first and this mod is done!

someone here try it out and report back lol

this thing is sold out lol

underscore 08-24-2010 10:36 AM

the thing has so many flaws in the design it's not even funny. the videos posted up look pretty shitty but even if this is a legit product, 1) Sony can kill it very easily, 2) Someone's already taken one apart and figured out what chip is being used inside it, so watch for much cheaper clones popping up soon.

The funny part is, chances are Sony put a unique key into each dev key (what this is a clone of) so someone is gonna get massively sued once Sony backtraces whose key is being used thousands of times.

of course, the internal drive doesn't use FAT32, so dumping games to the internal drive would still work. But Sony could also make it so that these padded files take up the entire BR disc, and noone wants 50GB game rips in their drive.

I just tested the software they uploaded and can confirm it works so far.

I can tell a bit about the backup manager. It seems the software uses bd_emu features to manage the backups. The HDD to use, should have a modified bd emu format, which sets all backups on first position, so the PS3 detects 'em all. Then you can choose the image to boot via the manager.

To directly copy and boot a game, the software would need to decrypt all layers on the fly. Meaning it decrypts all executables somehow, else it won't run. Even on a debug unit.

The hardware look like a copy of the original PS3 jigstick, used in SONY service centers to repair broken PlayStation3 SKU's. Someone internal leaked or sold a stick, so they had the chance to reverse and clone the hardware.

The stick should boot before the normal firmware does, so it's hard to patch it. Maybe SONY could update the bootcode to prevent it, set it to a revoke list.

This JIG CARD(aka USB DONGLE) is used for devs and technicians from sony to launch BOOT INI from DEV_USB0.
Combining some buttons you can change the SYSCON status, who launch as a primary boot this dongle.

BOOTSTRAP is read and the files from dongle are launched and the RAM is making a false REBOOT.
The whole thing its an SYSCON FIRMWARE EMULATOR.
TRM "thinks" we have a debug unit and KERNEL DEBUG is loaded.

This way a DEBUG VSHMAIN (temporarily) allows unsigned code load.
Now you can launch PKGs from USB (that has an explorer to do that)

To launch BDEMU you need a disc to activate MEDIATYPE BD.
When you launch LOADER(from usb) BDDRIVE CHANNEL is closed(they cant share the same channel).
To eliminate LAYER, it needs a CELLFTP to extract decrypted files(no layer) and to convert those to DEBUG MODE.
Executer files can be created with SDK,and generated by the same loader that extract the LAYER, and using PS3GEN to create signed isos(patched).
Same way a 360 works(using a core debug)

The LOADER is executed via APP.
ELIMINATING the initial USB BOOT, its all SONY has to do to kill this mod, because SYSCON is the boss

I'm guessing this'll be what Sony does next - or something similar (completely change their dev system)

It has also been noted that you can't apply game updates to an installed game.

pic of the inside: http://www.planetadejuego.com/upload...ages/jail3.jpg

and the back: http://www.planetadejuego.com/upload...ages/jail4.jpg

and of course, this'll be a huge risk to use

so (assuming this isn't already happening) all Sony has to do is have your PS3 log every Game/demo/etc that you run, and as soon as you go online, you're banned. Although seeing as you're using stolen Sony technology, maybe they'd be allowed to totally brick the console. Who knows.

While we are all up and excited about PSJailbreak (PSjb), there might be a risk on playing with PSjb on PSN. According to SKFUand RichDevX, the Backup manager game ID (LAUN-12345) could be logged/recorded by Sony when logged into PSN (when online). This would obviously allow Sony to see who would be using the illegal PSjb/clone and we could very well see ban waves similar to the Xbox 360. Sony does currently ban PSN/consoles that results in the 8002A227 error code.

hk20000 08-24-2010 11:38 AM

kind of silly. With the amount of epic game play you get from a proper PS3 games you just go buy what/who you like to support so the games keep coming back.

I mean games didn't get much more expensive over the years from PS1 to PS3 and look at how much more you are getting out of the same money...

Shun Izaki 08-24-2010 11:57 AM

although the dev jig got ripped and copied out thousands of times, if they had that kinda effort, they probably wiped the ID or made it look stolen anyways...

I'm all in it for hacking the shit out of the console, so I know it works

just for clarification sake, no one's paying $170 for it, and it's not a "debug CD" in any way like SkinnyPupp alluded to, it's a hardware chip, that they've just ripped to shreds. So for normal people, it's NOT a standard USB key, although it should have some small memory on it.

underscore 08-24-2010 12:04 PM

^ it's supposed to be update-able by plugging it into a computer, which I'm curious about as it's only one chip. Of course, whether or not they actually do this (or even survive long enough to) is up in the air.

I'd doubt they changed/removed the key (or if they even know how?) but either way Sony should be able to block it, or at least detect it and block you from PSN.

Sony can block regardless, as you'll be using the same unique game ID as everyone else who owns/rips that game. We'll have to find a stealth way around that.

I knew Sony would leave something stupid like USB/BOOT. you really only have that, SD card (on my fat 60), BD-ROM (not happening), or through something sick, like a full-blown invasion mod-chip like they already have KINDA working in China.

I just get my giggles off 'sploiting shit... i actually buy games.. .hell, my OEM interior and some exterior parts are going to my "gt5 room" :P

as for the updateable thing. It wouldn't take much storage on there, for them to "update", but if Sony decides to close USB_BOOT, then we're fucked for this exploit all together, unless someone has some sorta pandora power supply cable attachment. XD

Most games went up by $10 since the PS2. I don't remember what the retail on games were in the PS1 days but I know for sure it wasn't $69.99

actually, if you factor in the inflation with those kinda prices points, we're paying roughly the same, and if you think about it, alot more dev + hardware (BD vs DVD etc) goes into the new games... worth it IMO for a game you like.

hk20000 08-24-2010 12:47 PM

but there are still plenty of games retail just off the chart at 54.99... Either way you are getting so much more effort and game play in modern games it's a minimal price to pay.

Plus reselling is made much easier these days with CL trades and almost all chain stores offering a buyback scheme...

^ thanks, that's a summary of pages and pages of info I've found over the last couple days.

for the tl;dr types, it basically comes down to being rather useless at this point (for the cost) when you break it down. That, and you have a very, very good chance of being banned from PSN.

Good chance of being banned of PSN if you're retarded and decide to go online. But never the less... being banned = yes.

and... uhh, it won't be useless if we stay at 3.41 and people dev from there... it's not going to stop really... they'll make some way to launch sick ass shit using good 'ol stolen SOE's code. Modchips were never really legal, more grey-market anyways, let's just steal $100billion worth of code... same shit :P

underscore 08-24-2010 01:58 PM

well, going with it's "intended" use of being used for backups, I like to download updates and fixes for my games (which you can't with these backups) and I like to play online. so to retain this ability, I'd need another PS3 ($300-$350 + tax) plus this backup dongle ($170) to "back up" my games. Now even if you pirate them, you're looking at at least $470; so 7 brand new, $70 games. Of course you can buy games used for less than that (say $40) so now we're looking at about 12 games.

Where this DOES become useful of course, is if you have/purchase an older PS3 with a fried laser in the BR drive, and now have the potential for running fun things (say a bunch of emulators). Although until a cheaper version of this dongle comes out it still doesn't seem quite worthwhile to me, as a new laser is only about $60-70.

Maybe you're more creative than me, but in the end, I can't really think of anything that could be run on there that justifies the cost of getting a second PS3 and this dongle.

the broken BR drive just owned it's main function :( LOL But this is actually true of my HDLoader/Advance kit for myps2... dead lasers are so common... brought my old ps2 out, bought a network adapater, plugged a cheapass hdd in... good as new :P

underscore 08-24-2010 02:38 PM

well the websites say you can rip games to an external drive (but they never show any sort of selection screen in the videos, just a loader and another vid of some files being moved) which would allow you to rip the games using one PS3 and (I assume) play them on another (handy for users with multiple PS3's at home). The only downside is that the websites also say the backup utility cannot be removed from the system after it's installed, which would make using your primary PS3 for ripping a bad idea (unless maybe you completely format the HDD after?)

VK79 08-24-2010 09:48 PM

Biggest 9mm HDD so far is 750g I believe. Lets assume each BR game is 20-30G, so about 20+ games. Still you gotta shell out $5+ to rent the original game to rip it to your HDD. Unless you can get BR backups for <10 or torrent ISOs, this would be pretty pointless. Just rent the game if its a eye candy hack and slash that you can complete in a few days (GOW3, Dante Inferno) or Buy it and craigs it when you are done for the more time consuming ones like FF13 etc.

MOST games I know are approx 7-15GB, most of that other shit is padding to push it to the outer sectors of the discs so that the laser can read faster. Truth, because they did this ALOT on DC games, as their CD laser sucked balls, and had to rely on padding like no tomorrow.

Man... i miss the modding scene alot... I wish i had more time for it.

Vinny G 08-25-2010 09:37 AM

poor sony. their service manuals have now been leaked.

underscore 08-28-2010 12:55 PM

well, the sales have been banned until at least the 31

Sony Gets Federal Court to Temporarily Block Sale Of PS3 Modchips

Yesterday, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia was granted a temporary injunction by the nation's Federal Court to block the importation and sale of the new PS3 modchips.

The injunction means that until August 31, none of the modchip's Australian distributors will be able to import, sell or otherwise offload the devices. What's more, they have to take all the stock they already have and leave them with Sony's solicitors until the August 31 deadline passes.

Sony has from now until August 31 to convince the courts that the injunction becomes a more permanent arrangement (temporary injunctions are designed to maintain the "status quo" until a matter can be settled). If they succeed, it'll mean the end of legal sales of the device in Australia, but if they fail, then once September 1 rolls around the chips will be able to go on sale.

This is an interesting development, since a 2005 Supreme Court ruling determined that the sale of modchips was legal in Australia (though Nintendo was recently successful in banning the R4). We've contacted Sony to see how they managed to get around this, and will update if we hear back.

some info on game sizing and such: http://translate.google.com/translat...ml&sl=fr&tl=en

also, don't be dumb enough to get duped by this: http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00002014.html

also, Sony's service manuals (that show all chip pinouts, etc) were stolen off of DemonHades (a Spanish developer) blog, which was apparently "hacked." This sounds pretty fishy to me, because what kind of idiot would keep the service manuals stored in his blog, which was conveniently hacked. He'll probably get sued once Sony's done dealing with the USB mod.

where's the fun in pirating bunch a games and only having the time to play play like a level or two in each game...compared to buying a game every month or two and actually finish and enjoy them?

having the money left over in the end for hookers and blow.

I love hookers and blow. But, I also love the PS3. :D

The trick is finding a balance for all three. :awesom:
