How much better is a GT460 over an HD5770?

I got a new computer at work today and the IT guy went way overkill and put in an XFX Radeon 5770 1 gig.

I was planning on building a new media PC for my TV with a GT460 in the near future. Now I'm thinking of relocating the card in my work PC to my new media PC build (My work wouldn't care)... How much better performance is the GT460 over the HD5770? Would it be worth the cash over free?

If its just going to be a media pc, I dont see why you need such a powerful video card in your machine. 5770 will do just fine and is still a very good card.

If you're playing games that require high graphics, then its a different story.

Well yeah I might want to play the odd game, been thinking of trying Starcraft 2.

Where do you work? Because to be honest, taking a video card from work sounds...AWESOME LOL.

i have a radeon hd 5770 and quite honestly, its an awesome card for gaming, running SC2 on ultra with no lag which is good enough.

however, if you wanna look at benchmarks, Tom's Hardware's got it.

according to that link, clearly a GT460 is better by around 10fps... but im still sticking with my R5770 cause its damn cheap.

edit: just realized that the other card on the website is a GTX not a GT, but oh well...

Well, for sure the 460 is better, but you can't beat a freebie that does everything you need. Besides, by the time you want more power, you can always dump it back into the work pc. It's a win-win for you.

Take the 5770. Not worth buying a GT460 if you can get a 5770 for free.
