Help: Nikon camera creating new folders and resetting numerbing

hey guys

Here is my problem. I recently bought a Nikon D3000 and whenever I upload pictures onto my computer, they are all under the folder 100D3000. I went on a trip and took many pictures and when I started uploading the pictures, it created another folder called 101D3000. The problem is, the last image file name under 101D3000 was only DSC_1181. I knew that the camera will automatically create a new folder once it hits DSC_9999. When I open 101D3000, it restarted the numbering at DSC_0001 all the way to my last recent picture at DSC_0251. All the system settings are default.

I am wondering if any of guys can help me fix this problem or tell me why this happened. I just want all my images to be numbered in ascending order and not to have this happen again. Should I reformat my SD card? Will it keep my numbering? What do I have to do to keep the continuous numbering if i reformat?

Thanks for the help.

Nikon's numbering system doesn't go above 9999. So it'll create a new folder or you can change the prefix from DSC to DSD if you would like.

Its in the settings. I can't remember where (don't have camera on me) but I know its there. I think its called sequential numbering. I'll be home a little later but you'll probably find it before I do.

For the D90 it's Custom Setting Menu > Shooting/Display > File number sequence (d7) and turn that on.

Hopefully thats the same as the D3000s menu or close enough
