Career vs Location...how do you decide?

Hey guys, Im in a dilemnia...I work in the autobody trade and I live in coquitlam...a shop is willing to hire me all the way in South Vancouver...with rush hour that can be a 45 minute drive (no skytrain route there)

Should I hold out and look closer and possibly wait anotherr month for a position to open up near me? or accept any shop that's willing to hire?

This is a real serious career decision I dont wanna be regretting.

honestly 45 mins isnt too bad for rush hour
i say go for the job man. You may work out a deal with your employer to start at a early time or later time to avoid traffic.

45 minutes is nothing. When I saw the title of Career vs Location, I thought you meant half way across Canada, not a short drive across town.

That's what I thought.

I have a friend that just took a job position in T.O., so he's relocating there near the end of this month.

This should not be a decision that's keeping you awake at night.

45 minutes honestly isn't so bad. Sometimes it takes my dad 45 minutes just to get to Richmond from East Van.

A 45 minute commute is better than many people out there, but you also have to take into consideration your salary and expenses. Is it worth it to you to spend more money on car insurance & gas and is it worth it to spend 1.5 hours in your car everyday?

I used to have a 40 minute commute to Richmond and at the time I didn't really think it was a long commute. It seems long to me now, as my work is now a 3-4 minute drive or 15 minute walk away.

it IS a huge issue.

i was offered a job for 100k but it'll be in Whiterock and i'm from richmond. the fact i have to wake up 2 hrs ahead (i used to work in richmond which is less than 10 min away), it is a big deal.

to drive over 60km back and forth, to be stuck in traffic and stuck in commute and worse of all, falling asleep and being in the tunnel.. i did not go for the job. sometimes it's not really about the money.

^lol. You realize driving between Richmond and White Rock during normal rush times, you'd be driving against the flow of traffic. Depending on where you live in Richmond, your commute would be 30 min's each way. If it was a $100k job that you were offered Im sure you couldve simply re-located to White Rock or South Surrey. I hope you dont blame me for not believing your story.

Was this a troll post?

With Career vs. Location as the title I figured it was in another province...not 45 minutes away. Take the job!

i'm guessing it's not easy finding a job these days. 45 min isn't that bad. i used to bus 1.5h each way to my job. 5 years later i moved close to my work so bye bye commute.

can't always get what you want when starting out.

Everyone seems to say oh yeah, it's always flowing against the traffic and all but push comes to shoves it sucks when you go to work at 7:30 in the morning and it's dark and pissing rain and when you leave to go home in the winter (snow traffice etc), it's pissing rain, boring music... falling asleep behind the wheel is bound to happen. Happened to me many many times.

just like someone was saying, just rent + reallocation itself to be put into consideration, i would need at least 110- 115K before I would even consider moving for a job. If i was making 50k sureeee 100k would be great, but if you're making 80k+, making 100k is nothing considering the taxes and the actual take home income.

^ all joking aside. i rather bus 45 min. i used to work in yaletown and downtown, i said screw that shit. not even parking but i rather walk to the bus stop and bus and sleep on the bus for 35 min. that drive for 25. i did that for 2 yrs and i loved it. I always woke up happy going ot work after the bus ride and I always got home happy after a good nap.

45 mins is not bad at all, it takes me 1 hour and 10 mins to go to work.. if you are not getting other offers and there is a chance you might regret not taking the job, then take the job.

Are you more likely to get a job if the employer asks "Are you willing to relocate?"
