Does anyone have a Megasquirt Stimulator?

I'm having a problem with my car and need to find someone with a stimulator locally so I can see if it's a MS issue or a car issue.

This is what I need...

I know what a MS Stim is, but I always chuckle when I hear that...

falcon 09-10-2010 08:53 AM

ya I do too... don't know why they don't call is a SIM... instead of STIM.

falcon 09-10-2010 09:43 AM

Ya, I guess that makes sense.

Lomac 09-10-2010 09:57 AM

What's the car doing? I don't have a sim but i'm pretty proficient with ms.

I didn't do anything to the car other than moving the MS unit. I mounted it properly after a month and when I went to start the car it fired up on 2 cyl and then died when I let off the throttle. When I tried to re-start it it locked up.

It's not firing cyl 2 and 3. Getting fuel though... and lots of it. The engine felt all locked up (the starter would try to turn the engine but all it would get would be one hard CLUNK and the car wouldn't crank). I pulled the plugs, and unplugged the injectors and I literally had a geyser of fuel fly out of each cyl when I turned the car over this morning. I haven't had a chance to physically check coils 2 and 3 with a spark plug because it started raining.

And I checked all my connections. And two coils don't just die at exactly the same time. So there has to be something wonky with the MS.

Lomac 09-10-2010 10:03 AM

What version are you running?

MS1 hi res 10g something or other... not 100% sure.

xpl0sive 09-10-2010 10:30 AM

so did the engine turn over after you removed the injectors? cause if the engine doesn't turn over at all, you've got mechanical issues

Phil@rise 09-10-2010 10:32 AM

Sounds to me like those cylinder outputs off the ecu are shorted to ground either internally or externally. The reason your having issues with it turning over is to much fuel in your cylinder hydro locking it. Change your oil immedietly it will have fuel mixed in with it from the fuel being forced past the rings when you attempted to start it while hydro locked.
If you need help diagnosing it give me a call

falcon 09-10-2010 11:19 AM

Well I dug a bit deeper and found that my spark output is wired 1/3 and 2/4. And fuel output is 1/4 and 2/3. So logic would assume that fuel wiring is the culprit here because it was cyl 2/3 that had a ton of fuel. Like the MS is telling them to lock the injectors wide open. Gonna check my TPS circut and go from there.

just picked up oil and new plugs.

After a bit more fiddling I've discovered that it's cyl 1 and 3 that were not firing. Not cyl 2 and 3. So that makes me believe that my ignition driver is shot.

Lomac, it's a V3 board. Just opened it up. Not sure of the firmware though.

No visible blown caps, resistors or any touching wires. So I'm at a loss as to why this is happening.

I instantly clicked this thread when I saw the title, and must say I had something completely different in mind.

Guess I learnt something new today... :D

falcon 09-10-2010 01:52 PM

Can we please keep this to my issue? We get it, RS has a dirty mind... now get over it.

MS-1, I'm assuming?

Do you happen to know which ignition driver is on the board? There were some issues with the VB921 IGBT's that originally came with boards before the switched over to the Bosch BIP373's. You could have a perfect soldered board with no blown caps or anything and they'd still simply die.

Also, are you getting spark on 1/3? Are the coils good?

You can try hitting up msextra.com. That's the tech help forums for Megasquirt and there are some really awesome guys in there that can answer the most obscure problems with the system.

I've got your megasquit stimulator right here :troll:

buuut the tech forum might give you better results with serious responses :)

Is this some water gun or something?

Raid3n 09-11-2010 12:13 AM

this is getting old, fast.

enough with the bad jokes. give it a rest.

all OT posts from here on will get points.

I hate to hijack but I'm looking towards a standalone fuel management system for my next build: Megasquirt. Im just wondering about the reliability of this fuel management system..... Is there anything to be concerned about while using this system in a off road situation?

godwin 09-11-2010 02:09 AM

It depends on the budget, MegaSquirt is the best option you have under $1000.

For the OP, do you have a scope? just see what the output is. I don't think you need the stim for diagnosing what your system at this point. One quick and dirty way I test ignition module is use a IR thermometer, have it run a bit and point at the IR thermometer. The one with low temp you know it is not working.

Everything you just said is way over my head.

Yes, MS1.

I'm not sure what ignition board it has. Which one is it, and how do I check? The kit was ordered from DIYAutotune back in Feb/March sometime. So if they were still using the old board then, then I may have it.

No I am not getting spark on 1/3. Only 2/4. I swapped my coils as well to see if that was the issue and 1/3 was still dead. I pulled the plugs and they were soaked on 1/3 and looked normal on 2/4. The car ran a bit again, but only on 2 cyl.

I am running Toyota Coil Over Plugs, not the standard Miata ignition system. I've tested all teh COPs and they are within spec according to Toyota's manual.

It's a great system and easy to use. Just sometimes, like anything you might have an issue. There are thousands of people running these systems on everything from small CC mid 90's euro cars, to big block V8's, VW's and pretty much the majority of all the turbo miata guys are running them without problems.
