SO i got the yellow light of death on my ps3, and i'm not sure if i want to fix it, as Sony charges about $150, and after checking craigslist seems other people charge around $100, for that price, i may as well get a new ps3..
question is fellow rs members, wheres the best place to get a deal?
thanks!
p.s. does the new 160gb have backwards compatibility?
"It's called Sex Panther by Odeon. It's illegal in nine countries... Yep, it's made with bits of real panther, so you know it's good ... They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time. "
I had the backwards compatable 80gig ps3 and had YLOD
i sent it in to sony to get it fixed just because I don't want it screwed up by 3rd party repairs
if you want to take a risk then go for it, but sending it to the repair depot in coquitlam is the safest bet
Me and my friend worked on his ps3 following this tutorial and it worked, but I don't know if it will work for yours, but you could try it if you're going to buy a new ps3 anyways:
What I did was when mine got the YLOD was I repaired it...sold that one and bought the slim... selling my old ps3 didnt cover all the cost of the new ps3 but it helped.

my 60 gig died, got it repaired and it died again. Sold it for $100 and got a slim. I was very sad when it died again after the repair but its bound to happen. You can never fully repair the YLOD. It'll just come back. Best to get a slim
I actually fixed mine too with gilksys method. But while heating it i must've loosened a chip or sth cause It wouldn't recognize the blu ray drive afterwards. I was pretty choked and got a mobo replacement for 80 bucks.
Backwards compatibility was lost after the 80gb fat version, which only had software emulation. That was lost in a firmware update.
I think you are misinformed. The CECHE01 80GB SKU did use software emulation from the CPU standpoint but still used the PS2 GPU (Graphics Synthesizer).
It is very unlikely sony will remove backwards compatibility via FW updates on these consoles if there's already hardware to support it.
Thanks for all the suggestions so far guys, i might as well try the method on youtube, i have nothing to lose really. i';m reluctant to sending itinto sony becausei heard they send youa refurbrished one and so you'll lose all your files anyways, and it costs $150 right? can anyone confirm that?

i currently have the 80gb fat, and well it had backwards compatibility even after the latest system update.
but that's a moot point now lol i dont really need backwards compatibility i was just wondering.

a guy in surrey near my house. He charged $80 for the repair but I had warranty for up to 6 months and if it died again he would repair, if it died again after then he would give me all my money back which he did. I eventually sold it to a repair guy that used it for parts for $100.
i bought a slim ps3 a while back after my fat bc died.. i never really played ps2 games on it anyway, and it doesnt look so great on a nice tv.
ps3 dont really go on sale too much.. and i got it at one of the superstore no tax sale events. i think they occur quite often.
i got the slim, + extra controller (promo) and a free turkey (spend over $250) for 300 tax in. lol
HAHAAH I got a free turkey during thanksgiving too. I was kind choked cause the week before they had a $50 GC lol. It was kind of weird bringing a turkey to the electronics department.
just wondering... how much useage did you guys put on the ps3 before you got the ylod? cuz i've been using mine for quite some time now and haven't had any problems with it (knock on wood). how many hours a day would you say the ps3 is on?

yeah good question...I was just going to ask.
I've never even heard of the YLOD problem until I read this post...wha causes the YLOD?

Unleaded solder eventually cracks from continuous expanded and shrinking from temperature change, breaking the contact points on the motherboard. All modern electronics are destined to fail because of this.
I've had my PS3 since launch and just recently got the YLOD, so that's about 4 years of use with about a dozen hours a week.
the older ps3 used too much power..= too much heat which makes the motherboard malleable. apparently it has to do with the ROHS standards..which is common in consoles and laptops
