Connecting two laptops for gaming?

My gf and I are sitting around and we each have laptops with windows 7, and would like to play some battleship or Warcraft or some type of game against each other.

How do we set up a connection to play games between our two laptops at home, to avoid screen looking?

and what games do you recommmend that i could download

you can make an ADHOC connection on either of your laptops. The other one connects to it like WIFI and then you can make a LAN game and then you can play each other.

This is how we played DOTA in lectures lols.

It's game dependent. Some games support multiplayer, some don't.
a) some games support internet play, and some only LAN play. (some support both)

If you want a good free LAN game:
Grand Theft Auto 2 is super fun and will work with most PCs!

don't need a router...

get a cross-over network cable, plug it in to both laptops.

Then manually set the IP address of both laptops, you don't need to fill in DNS servers or default gateway.

laptop 1
ip: 192.168.1.50
subnet-mask:255.255.255.0

laptop 2
ip:192.168.1.51
subnet-mask:255.255.255.0

Probably right out to lunch here, but what are you doing sitting around the house with your laptops? Playing solitaire? Or smurfing teh intrawebs? I'm thinking probably the latter... which means THEY ALREADY HAVE A ROUTER, PEOPLE. Probably wireless, too. But that's just a wild guess.

Which means Eclypz is the only other one who's thinking...

lol, thats some good CSI skills you got going on there :P

yes, we do have a wireless router. She just got a new free laptop...so we wanted to geek it out and play some games

i have a nice pirated version of WC2 which i would be thrilled to play between the computers, or any game really...

I have no idea how to get the two computers to recognize one another...is there like a step by step way of setting them up to play each other?

Well, as Eclypz noted, the exact process will depend on the game. Most modern games go through an internet server for online play, so you would just each need to have an account on the relevant server and the two machines wouldn't have to communicate directly.

Some multiplayer games allow or require you to run your own server, in which case you could fire that up on one of the two laptops, then get that laptop's IP by clicking Start and typing "cmd" in the "Search programs and files" box and hit Enter, and in the command window that pops up, type "ipconfig" and hit Enter. You should then see something like this:

Quote:
Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : vf.shawcable.net
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::8cbd:5ebe:4c53:d545%12
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.195
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
You'd then use the "IPv4 Address" on the second laptop to connect to the one with the server.
