What is the best bang for the buck home package bundle?

hey guys, sorry if this is posted on the wrong section..

recently before summer started my family moved to my grandma's house cause our new house has some piping issues.

right now for our tvr we are using some old bell satellite pakage, a telus home phone package and a telus enhanced high speed internet package. we found this retardedly expensive because we are paying for 3 different things. For satellite tv we dont have many channels and the telus internet obv sucks balls. the home phone is pretty pricey too..

what is the cheapest home bundle with phone/tv/ and internet combined?

or do you have to buy the stuff separately? thanks if anyone can help. sorry if im not specific enough and my english sucks lol :(

i was looking at that one too but the problem for that one is that you have to rent the box and how much it costs after that one year :S but thanks for the help anyways

trip 09-26-2010 05:53 PM

regular digital box is 2.95/month
HD box is 12.95/month
HDPVR is 24.95/month

most promotions for new customer is free rental for equipment for duration of promotion.. not inc hdpvr

i dont think theres a bundle for all those services for 80$ on promotion. then again it depends on the tv package you want. might be possible if you only want channels 2-28

Vulcan300 09-26-2010 06:43 PM

just go with shaw, and then talk to retentions after 1 year and tell them you are switching to telus. if they don't offer you a deal, then just switch to telus to get a new customer promo and switch back to shaw as a new customer after 6 months if you didn't like their service.

silva95teg 09-26-2010 09:43 PM

For Telus optik the cheapest home bundle is $81, there are promotions going around i have seen for 30 for all three though, i think shaw has the same.

For 81 you get, land line with one calling feature, 15 meg internet, and essentials plus a few hd channels. On a three year service agreement the 3/4 tuner pvr is included or it can be rented for 15 per month.

You can price it out and see whats available on their site. https://www.telus.com/order/bundles/...execution=e1s1

I just switched to telus from shaw. basic cable with hd channels(92 ch in total) and high speed internet(15mb/sec 100gig/m)for 46.95/month. with a land line goes to 61.95/month. contract is on cable only. you can sign a contract for internet and get either an xbox(37/month) or an hp laptop(47/month) with it. otherwise internet is like 10/month. cable i did a 3 yr term for 36.95/month. comes with 1 pvr and cable box, both no rental fee on my contract. I called shaw back and told them the telus deal and they did shit for me. cheapest was like 80/month. whoop-dee-do...they knocked off $20 for me. i make the switch this coming thur. cant wait to watch hockey on hd channels!

underscore 09-27-2010 01:51 AM

We've got the Shaw bundle (phone, regular highspeed, and regular HD) and two PVRs (which I think we just straight up bought) and it's fantastic. I'll try to remember and check about how much it costs us tomorrow, but all in all it's a pretty good deal, it's extremely rare for us to have any downtime and when we do, it's very brief. I don't know about where you live, but up here Telus sucks.

And when you think about it, there's a reason Telus can give you a free console or laptop when you sign for that long...

LOL are you kidding me?? Have you not read some of the posts we get on this site? A lot of them would be better understood if they were written by a downtown whore instead...

Back on topic, my family recently switched from shaw to telus. We got $10/month phone, $10/month optik internet, $10/month optik tv (free pvr & 2nd box rental). These prices are valid for the first twelve months. We're also paying an extra $15/month for chinese channels, and about $10/month for sports HD and news HD package.

This is insanely cheap, especially if you don't get the extras. We were paying about $150/month before that.

The tv and internet has been sub-par though. Although the speeds are good, they force you to use their shitty ass router for internet. TV service also has more problems than i've ever seen before. Both would drop connections every now and then, forcing you to reset your router and cable boxes.

Phone has been perfect though, thats one thing Telus can do right.

tegz 09-27-2010 03:26 AM

LoL I signed up for telus HD cable... Only asked for basic HD channels (which includes like 5 channels in HD for 5 bucks a month)

Anyway had a pretty good convo with the cable dude, he was super friendly so of course I was nice to him as well..

He didn't say anything at the time but things turned out that he gave me all the HD cables available for Telus for free... And I had that for about a whole year before I stopped watching TV in general (no time) and cancelled my TV subscription..

Thinking back now, I kinda miss it =/

Do you have two separate boxes a black modem and a silver router ? If so you can put a switch between them and plug your own router into one of the ports for your internet. I have the same service and have not experienced any problems except the odd glitch on the tv but no more than i had with bell prior. You may need to get a tech out to look at it.

blum2001 09-27-2010 12:22 PM

I bounce back and forth between Shaw and Novus and at the end of every promo I just call retentions to see what kind of deal they can get me, otherwise I switch.

Right now I'm paying $60/month for Shaw Xtreme internet/Full HD/Shaw home phone, and in about a year I'll call back to see what they can do. If they can't, Novus it is...

Yeah that sounds like what i got. I've been trying to do that; use my old N router as an access point or something, but I haven't had time to figure it out yet.
I consider myself pretty tech savvy too, but networking stuff just frustrates the hell out of me.

HonestTea 09-27-2010 02:33 PM

I'm paying $120-ish/month

High Speed Internet + Shaw Home Phone + Basic Cable and pretty much all the channels except for the movie channels and paid ones + Chinese channel bundle

So expensive :( I get NO HD channels T_________T

Called 2days ago and spoke to retentions asking if their was anything they can do and they said I'm already paying less then a lot of people and they already -$20 off my price($140~) 6 months ago..

trip 09-27-2010 08:08 PM

fyi telus new optic is just a rebranded service and they're testing it out on new customers by offering it cheap and locking ppl in on contracts.

essentially being guinea pigs.

see if you can get all 3 services for one year w/shaw at $80

jackal 09-27-2010 08:54 PM

I hear ya..shaw didnt do anything to keep me. In this day and age, whoever offers the lowest prices with good service wins(although i've never used telus for anything other than phone line, so lets hope they have good service)

Free? I dunno...never such a thing as a free lunch these days.

insomniac 09-27-2010 09:55 PM

not to be cocky, but i need like the best internet there is haha
my brother plays games like crazy, both my parents browse the internet quite a bit (stream/dowload dramas etc) and as you can tell from my post count/time i joined i browse the internet quite a bit myself.
right now we have two hardwired computers and 2 laptops on wifi and 2 phones on wifi with telus enhanced internet and its not fast enough even though we got pretty good routers and i can say decent computers.

thanks for all the help guys. thanked most of you (:

lilaznviper 09-27-2010 10:00 PM

i called shaw today and they offered me 91 bucks for all 3 services for a year but then i told them i was a student so i just got the student promo which is pretty good about 55 bucks a month with highspeed and basic cable

true that it is a rebranded service (microsoft mediaroom) however not true on the guinea pigs part considering it was annouced back in 03 in the US. No need to guinea pig a product that has been out for 7 years.

as for getting "fast internet" you should be more concerned with how the internet systems work. Shaw gets internet to people using a "hub" format where Telus is dedicated line to each home.

A hub network is one where all customers within a neighbourhood share a common wire and all the splits, repeaters and wall jacks associated with that wire. The unused wall jacks act like small antennas transmitting noise INTO the cable network. This noise reduces the overall signal to noise (S/N) ratio for the entire network segment and reduces everybody's level of service.

Also Shaw uses DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) which in short is a way to monitor your actions online

Also people please stop saying stupid things like this company sucks and this company sucks cause really the service will only be as good as the person who installs it. I've had Shaw before and it was terrible due to the shitty coax that the Shaw guy made for me. Ive had Telus too and that sucked dude to the lazy installer (no filter) No matter what company you go with it will suck if not properly installed.

Please educate yourself on how the systems work and don't focus on the name of the company or what random people say, one persons exp will vary greatly to your own.

Couple big things people seem to forget sometimes too is that Shaw throttles your bit torrent where Telus doesn't as well as Telus does not enforce their download cap.

I say look at your options as both companies have good points and bad points but the best case would be to play the companies against each other and reap the rewards

BTW "Telus Enhanced" ranged from 3.0mb - 6.0mb so yes when compared to Shaw's Extreme (15mb) of course its gonna be slowly. Go compare packages at the same level before you complain one company is worse than another.

xxxrsxxx 09-27-2010 10:35 PM

how much are you guys paying now? I have shaw basic cable + fairchild package (chinese channels) + high speed internet = $81 + tax

6thGear. 09-27-2010 10:51 PM

My Jay is right, telus doesn't enforce the DL cap. I only switched due to cost...im getting the same service but for half the cost. When your living on your own and paying a mortgage and car payment and everything else, you look for the best deals and save money where you can. Every little bit helps.

Odd, my experience is totally different from yours. If Shaw is throttling my torrents then they sure aren't throttling is very much as I can always get things as fast as the seeds will let me. I don't have any proper numbers but it's always plenty fast.

For the download capping, Shaw only checks on people at random, and even then they just send you an e-mail asking you to cut back or something (I got one once, 3 years ago).

I do know that a few of my friends have received messages from Telus asking them to cease and desist (or something) when they've downloaded part of a pirated torrent that was being watched though...

Mr.HappySilp 09-28-2010 11:48 AM

Should have check redflags. They posted some good promos there form SHAW and Telus and even teach you what to say to get the best deals. Of coz be prepare to be on hold for 40mins + with SHAW though.
