funeral service, taking advantage of people's emotions and make a huge profit. I don't think people "shop-around" for these things.

Why not try and take a travel card slip out of 424? My dad is a member out of there and they usually have work floating around for travel cards/permits.

It shouldnt be hard to secure something through them, especially if you're a journeyman with your IP.

Hey just wondering if you guys could give me some info here on the ibew.

I'm a journeyman electrician currently working for a non union company here in vancouver. I'm looking to make a switch and possibly work out in alberta for a while. If I were to go union would I have to join the ibew here and try to get transfered to alberta?, or could I join the 424 directly somehow?

Those 100+ members probably aren't exactly knocking on doors or building contacts day to day. It does also depend on the trade, but from the few unemployed trades people I know of are either only checking Craigslist for postings, or don't want to take a 15/hr job and rather do nothing and wait god knows how long until a 35/hr job calls them.

I'm still an apprentice and it's pretty hard to find work. At this rate I'll never get my ticket. Alberta has always been at the back of my mind but I'm not sure I'd want to leave BC at this time.

CL is probably one of the last places I'd look for an electrical job. Many are sketch as hell and/or you will be working by yourself with no journeyman all the time. If those employers had nothing to hide, maybe they'd list the name of their company in the ad. Majority of ads don't say the company name and I would never apply to those. It could be somebody trying to harvest information if you send them your resume. I've tried cold calling contractors (non-union) and they're not hiring either.

if you are an electrician.. i ocassionally have general contractors contact me who need some light/minor electrical work done.

send me a PM and if anything comes my way i'll let you know. these are all side jobs and wont count towards your hours.

i got out of the electrical bizz for the time being.. couldnt find decent paying work and decided to change it up for the time being

Yeah, I see a lot of postings for business/systems analyst positions in IT infrastructure. I know Deloitte is ramping up hiring for the IT consulting side. Accenture too.

Yeeah dont bother with CL, most of them are looking to hire journeymans who are willing to degrade themselves for $20 an hour. Try posting your resume on workopolis. I was working for an electrical contractor, help run some pretty big jobs with him. economy went to shit, and got temporarily laid off due to shortage of work. Posted on workopolis, recruiters found me and landed a job with RBC facilities management. I'm glad of being laid off, it only opens new doors.
