whatever it is..make sure you are projecting it long term
lots of hot jobs where you go back and do more education and by the time you come out it might have been saturated already.

i can tell you what industry are NOT in high demand.

1) mechanics
2) teachers (yes they need teachers, but there is more or less a budget lock so hiring is an issue)

Teachers are overrated, pretty much everyone that I know that can't find a job with their arts/science undergrad degrees goes into teaching, failing to realize that Vancouver doesn't need that many teachers anymore and they certainly don't have the budget for hiring to fill new positions.

Trades is SO slow right now, especially Electrical. IBEW 213's unemployed list has over 100 members on it for over a year now.

i dont think they factored in that people are living longer and are generally going to work longer as well

Just stay away from any form of service work. After HST the majority of people I know working as either electricians, plumbers or for contractors were laid off, including myself.

Actually, people in general are living shorter lives because of the general change in lifestyle from an active one to a fairly static one.

Care attendants, occupational therapy, golf coach...

Hmm, not sure about that one. I would say that our health care system is doing a good job of keeping alive longer than they should be in spite of overall health (i.e. obese people on breathing aids and mobility devices.)

TheNewGirl is right - basically anything catering to care for seniors and for others needing living assistance should be a sure bet for the next 20-30 years. However, it's definitely not easy work.

It's not terrible work either. My mother works doing recreation programs for seniors. The ones you encounter in that kind of work are typically high functioning & still in possession of most of their marbles. She considers it the most rewarding work she's ever done.

I would seriously consider a position in recreational therapy or physical therapy for seniors if I was going to make a major career overhaul.

Not all jobs involving the aging population involve changing bed pans giving sponge baths.
