File hangs computer when trying to access

Ok so i have this file on my computer its 8gbs

When i try to access the file even if i try to move its location... the computer just hangs and nothing happens the progress bar pops up but it just keeps going and going and nothing happens and the computer ends up lagging like shit

i look at processes running to see why and its explorer.exe

so i figure im going to need to delete the file

but i cant... the recycle bin just keeps trying and trying (showing that its moving the file to the bin) but nothing happens

i go into cmd prompt to delete it the old school way ... and nothing happens it just hangs the computer and it gets all laggy

i go into safe mode and the same thing...

just this particular file mind you.... i run chkdsk and nothings wrong either

i've ran my spyware and virus progs and nothing

so i have no clue....

edit: should add i can't even right click on the file to look at properties it hangs and lags the comp when i do that too

Shove it in another computer and try again. You might need to gain control of the file first though.

How long have you let it go for? Just let the computer "hang" overnight. The file is pretty huge. Factor in fragmentation, and it could take a while to delete.

EDIT: Also, run scandisk or chkdsk /f on the drive, and try to delete the file again.

don't move to the recycling bin. Hold "Shift" + Del, to outright delete the file. It won't completely clear the file off your hard drive, but at least you can write over the sectors again.

is it on your boot drive?

if not, easiest way for me would be to just back up the drive, then just format it.

last resort.

try accessing ur computer from DOS, put in windows 98/ME boot disc to access, then delete straight from dos.

DOS works differently than command prompt.

Was it some kind of multimedia file?

Usually this happens because Windows tries to read information for the file, even if you just have it highlighted... and for whatever reason, it's choking at this point.

1) it might be having problems because windows is trying to preview the file (i.e. avi preview in thumbnails)

2) use hijackthis to delete on reboot

Errors on hard drive, perhaps? Did you run a chkdsk? At least it's gone, now.

Glad you were able to remove it, if this type of thing happens again for anyone else here are somethings you can try.

Change your folder view to 'list' to prevent windows from trying to load a thumbnail for it

Load up Process Explorer and see what is trying to access that file, or if you have Windows Media Player, etc, trying to load but hasn't appeared yet.

Try out Space Monger, its a different way to view the files and folders within Windows and very useful if you suddenly are running out of HD room like if a AV DB is ballooning
