The Larges won their fortune in a July 14 Lotto 649 draw and decided to give almost all of it away.

After taking care of their family, the couple donated money to area churches, fire departments, cemeteries, the Red Cross and hospitals where Violet, who has cancer, has undergone treatment.

Large, a 75-year-old retired welder, said they gave away 98 per cent of their winnings and banked the remaining two per cent “for a rainy day.”

“We have no plans. We're not travellers. We're not night-prowlers. We're not bar-hoppers. We're just ordinary country folk.”

They already have enough for their retirement, from savings over time. Given their age, there wasn't any point in keeping money they wouldn't use (imo):

He said they worked for 30 years in Ontario and put away money every year before retiring and returning home to Nova Scotia.

“We weren't millionaires before, but we had enough to keep us going in our retirement years,” he said. “We were quite happy with what we had and the way we were going.”

Great story. Great people. It is their privilege to give the money to whomever they want. Fuck all the haters that say the should have done whatever with the money, instead.

Then why buy the ticket in the first place?

So people who are greedy will not end up with it. Plus, it's fun to play the lottery. Just like some people sit in front of a jackpot machine in the casino for hours on end.

The children were looked after. Kudos for them. Spread the wealth to those who need it.

A good mix of charities, too.

They did keep 2% of their winnings for a "rainy day" fund, not that they would need it since they already have regular savings. And some people buy lotto tickets as a weekly habit, not necessarily in hope of winning it all and quitting their job etc. I highly doubt a couple of ~75 year olds buying a lottery ticket are expecting to change their lives when they win a jackpot.

Good couple.

J____ 11-04-2010 02:12 PM

ticket straight to heaven, well deserved.

essel 11-04-2010 03:00 PM

How nice of them, glad they won and not some addict who'd spend the winnings all on drugs etc

AzNightmare 11-04-2010 03:09 PM

2% is still $220,000

That's quite a lot.

Sgt_Koopa 11-04-2010 03:11 PM

I'm up for adoption!! :D That was pretty cool of them to do that.

hirevtuner 11-04-2010 03:54 PM

well you can't take the money with you when you die...so it is good to hear that they spread the money to where it is really needed

t8v6 11-04-2010 04:58 PM

wow, didn't expect that at all. this news actually made my day. :)

HonestTea 11-04-2010 05:29 PM

What a nice couple! Brings a smile to my face knowing how much 11mil would help those organizations.

Theirs actually some good people in this world! Amazing..

Integgyy 11-04-2010 05:45 PM

kudos for them donating to the local community like the firehalls, cemeteries etc.

DragonChi 11-04-2010 05:46 PM

Wow, they've got to truely be happy/content with their lives to do that.

rslater 11-04-2010 06:04 PM

The 11 million they gave away was given to 14 members of their family plus all the charities. They might given each family member a couple 100,000 for all we know.

AzNightmare 11-04-2010 07:22 PM

lol. 11 mil is a LOT to go around.
