went to the coquitlam location today and they told me they were closed. I asked them why and they said they had a "situation". I asked them when they will be back open and they said they don't know... at least for today. wtf happened. many of the shelves were empty and there were like about 4 people in there filming something. friggin pissed... was happy they opened in coquitlam because i live there but because the store was closed, i went to richmond. fml

I have the slik sprint pro original lying around from my p&s days. There is no chance of it being sturdy enough for a 70-200 and 60D. I took it with me as a light carry on for my trip to england, and it could BARELY hold up my 5D and 17-40. legs were ok ish, but the ball head scared me.

You can replace the ball head.

I could, but it seems pointless to upgrade a $100 tripod

I bought a 055prob/486rc2 once I started using the heavy equipment anyways

gilly 11-16-2010 05:52 PM

hc529 11-16-2010 05:56 PM

yap they were doing inventory count and estimated around $100,000.

The guy has the smaller Sprint and he doesn't seem to have any problems using it with a 5dm2+Bg-E6+24-105mm. Mind you the version 2 has a different ball head than the version 1 (which you have right?).

77civic1200 11-16-2010 10:37 PM

As far as I can tell the differences are the foam over the legs, and the ballhead now has a quick release plate. It doesn't appear that the actual ball and clamp portion of the head is any bigger/stronger. Which is why I suspect the guy you linked to upgraded the head in the second link.

The head will hold a decent amount of weight, but only if its pretty balanced, and the head is straight up, and you really reef on the lever. If you try and aim it up or down it gets weak. I used it to take a couple portrait orientation shots with the 5D + 17-40, and I literally had to tighten it say 15 degrees past where I wanted it, then let it sag down to vertical. It was a crappy guess and check till I got it level.
