I'm thinking about doing a career change thus the need to go back to school. I never attended a university when I graduated HS in 01. I went to Arts Institute instead (regret it now), graduated in 04 and worked until now. Since none of the AI course are transfer-able, I need to rely on my HS grades. Now I'm reading that UBC/SFU only look at the final school mark since provincials are optional now. Since I did all my provincials (since it was required back then), do they still look at the blended grade for me? Or only if it increases my overall average?

Some people say, if you did your provincial, they will look at the blended. Others say, they only include your provincial if it increases your average.

All my provincials dropped my grade

so I'm hoping they just look at my school grades without provincial marks included.

It's best if you just give them a call and ask. I'd say they'll look at your final grade (including provincials) since this isn't a case where you're applying for conditional acceptance. I'm not sure what required averages are to get in, but before it was ~80% unless you were going into business.

You could always take a year or two at langara and then transfer over. It's much easier that way (I think you need a 2.2 cgpa or something) and you save a lot of money too.

Hmm Langara huh, I never gave that a thought.

I was looking to get into business for either school. I don't have the 90% + average to get direct entry into 1st year so I was going to go through Arts and transfer into business after.

Last option is to do the business program @ BCIT which I know I have the grades for.

Transferring into business isn't that easy. A lot of people have the mindset of going into arts and then transferring, but of course things don't usually work out as planned - I'd say most don't end up making the grade and end up with a BA.

Business at BCIT is fine. Guaranteed acceptance is a lot better than doing 2 years of lower division business courses just to find out you don't make the cut.

for sfu they increased the cgpa for the lower division to 3. smthg to get into business and since you havent been in school for a while that might be bit difficult. many ppl are trying to transfer in but only very few make it

Pretty sure u have to redo/adult upgrade ur highschool mark cuz as far as I know highschool marks are only valid for 5 years and after that they don't mean jack

I'm actually fairly certain JDMCivic is correct, unfortunately. I would send you a link verifying that courses expire after five years, but university websites are confusing at best, I'd suggest you call a post-secondary school and ask them to confirm.

just curious what did u take at AI? my friend graded from there and is working for Blizzard right now. Also, I think you can apply as a mature student? and grades will be less of a focus then what you did for the last few years...like work etc...

I took their game programming program and worked @ EA as a Software Engineer for the last 4 years.

the requirements are alot higher now.
for high school students, 82%+ is pretty standard for arts, almost 90% for business too..

pretty sure they will count the blended score if you chose to take provincials. because its an optional thing, you can't just tell them you want to take back your mark after you get a decreased final score.

Talked to an advisor at UBC and she said even though I took the exam back when it was required, they still use the new guidelines. That means they only take the blended if it bumps up your average. But she also said I can't get into 1st year Commerce since I've already done some post secondary. So what she recommends is for me to take 1st year Commerce at a college and transfer into 2nd or 3rd year. She basically said it's easier to get in since the transfer average from a college is lower.

I'm looking between Kwantlen and Langara. Kwantlen is closer to where I live but Langara seems to have a nice transfer program for UBC Commerce. Any suggestions?

Both should have the suitable transfer programs for ubc, although Langara is more suited for UBC. I believe Kwantlen should have the necessary programs that UBC commerce requires. One thing I will say is that Langara business has a f***ed up grading system indicated below:

B:75-80
B+:80-84
A-:85
A:90

In your case, I'd choose Kwantlen, but I don't know how they grade...
And another thing, it does not matter where you transfer from.

they take the higher mark of the blended or class mark...even if you chose to do the provincial and bombed it..they will look at the higher mark...I know because I applied to SFU this year

Yeah, it can be pretty difficult... I have some friends who are trying to transfer in. The 3.0 has to be in "core business classes" too, other elective courses don't count. If you want in to the BBA program try to get in right off the bat.

Well I applied to Kwantlen to do my 1st year there and then will try to transfer to 2nd year UBC Commerce or SFU BA (depending on GPA of course). As mentioned above I can't get directly into 1st year @ UBC since I've already done some post secondary. Not sure if the same applies to SFU.

I do know for sure there's no way I want to complete my degree @ Kwantlen. I'm looking at Kwantlen to be a way into a better school.

Hey man, I'm in a similiar boat, I graduated a little later (05), but if you have a goal and your willing to put in the time and effort, nothing can stop you. Good luck to the both us.
