Accident alert November 30 49th and boundary

That intersection is gridlocked. I didn't clearly see the accident but from where I was a bus turned left on to 49th at the same time a pickup turned right. The pickup us severly smashed and I saw pieces fly into the sky. Be safe everyone!

assuming it was on a yellow, out of courtesy that pickup should have waited to turn right and let the left turners go... but since this is Vancouver the land of the selfish and inconsiderate. If he didnt die maybe next time he will yield for a few seconds next time.

keifun 11-30-2010 04:47 PM

oh wow, good thing today I decided to take Kerr instead of Boundary on my way home from work just now.

FatalCloud 11-30-2010 04:53 PM

damn k3lv....this is the 2nd time in less than a month? i did a u-turn and went the long way home instead of waiting it out. how about you?

Zerius 11-30-2010 04:54 PM

Just got back home from giving my statement.

RIP to the pickup truck driver, they blanketed him before they could even cut him out. Middle aged Caucasian male from what I saw.

@ Fatalcloud: I'm working earlier hours now so you won't see me, but I went to metro to pick up my mom.

I was the third car facing westbound, I think it may be both parties fault, as the pickup went through a yellow, and the bus is left turner(which always seems to have some fault).

Second time reporting this intersection, I'm starting to get scared about driving around here.

Zerius 11-30-2010 05:09 PM

From what I saw walking by, the pickup was halfway into the left lane going westbound, so I don't believe that the bus is at fault. At the same time the bus stop is also 30 feet from the curb so the bus was likely turning into the right lane at the time, so that wouldn't have helped the pickup driver.

RIP

I dont know who's right who's wrong, but your assumption of what happened is most likely correct. Pickup turning right into the left lane, bus turning left into the right lane.

Ouch. Busses turn left onto boundary like that?

I assume the bus is heading westbound, making a left onto boundary southbound.

There were radars down at boundary and marine too i heard from the radio.

RIP to the driver, my condolences to his family and friends.

Lets keep this from trying to determine whose at fault, in respect of the deceased.

It's worth noting precautions we can take as drivers if it saves someone else from being in the same situation.

This time, it's yielding to left turn vehicles when the light is yellow. Alot of people in Vancouver should learn this commom courtesy.

from my understanding..whoever turns on a yellow at the same time as someone turning right from the opposite side and a collsion happen..left-turner will be at fault as the right-turning car has 'right' of way? Unless the left-turner has the left-turn light.

Not really racist! 11-30-2010 07:42 PM

You're supposed to come to a full stop on a yellow anyways when you wanna turn right. Barely anybody does it though..

gloors 11-30-2010 07:44 PM

Damn.. RIP to the pickup driver. A lot of people like to beat yellow / red lights to turn left onto 49th from boundary I just smh every time.

As a right turner, a yellow means yielding to the left turner first, then proceed.

My rationale:
1. Avoid collision with the left turner, in case he does a wide turn.
2. Ease the stress of the left turner, as the traffic light is fast approaching red and he has no return.

I hate it when people turn right as I am making a left.. it gives a sense of pressure and more difficult to estimate space.

Matsuda 11-30-2010 09:57 PM

i live sort of nearby, the road going southbound on boundary is still blocked and they're detouring people according to the radio

According to ICBC...and my dad being at fault for hitting a left hand turner.

Left turners have the right away....yellow means stop...does not mean beat the light.

Look at the BUS...perfectly intact against a pick-up...the bus driver sits half a foot from the front...WOW!

snowball 11-30-2010 10:59 PM

You'd have a hard time arguing that you couldn't stop in time for a yellow when making a right turn unless you're turning at 40 km/h.

Yellow means stop unless you're already in the intersection (and the bus would've been in the intersection already and get right of way in a left turn vs. right turn on yellow situation)
