i think MS still covers the RROD..you should call them and check before you decide repair it yourself or purchase a new one. They can tell if its covered when you give them your xbox serial number.
^ only 3yrs rrod coverage. So your out of luck there op, the hd you got will not fit in the new 360. They are different. However you can get one of those data transfer kits from deal extreme (about $20-30).
Getting a new one is prob the best way as the new ones has less problems but looking to it the base 4GB can't do a lot that the bigger hd's one can. Posted via RS Mobile
How likely do Xbox 360s RROD? I was looking at some used ones on CL and they're dirt cheap. $150ish for 120gb elite. good deal or avoid like the plague?
I'd say quite likley. They were up to about a 45% fail rate, now they're down around 20-25%. If anything I'd get an older one, the newer ones with "better" heatsinks are more prone to hard to fix problems, whereas the older style are more likely to get an "easy" to fix problem.

I have repaired my first gen xbox360 for like 3 fucking times over the past 2 years, it still fail on me and I gave up, I should have spent the total of $150 on a new xbox360. Not worth the money and time.
few things that you have to consider.
1) no one can fix RROD permanently, unless you get some hardcore guy that will reball all the contact points under your cpu / gpu. That will cost you much more than buying a new 250gb xbox360;
2) for $60, they probably change the x-clamp, put on some new thermal grease, and do some silly mod to the fan, you can do it by yourself in 3 hrs after reading some youtube guides;
3) some cheap ass will just do the toothpick trick, towel trick, and run away with your $60 and you still get RROD after a week or so;
4) if you salvage your old xbox360, you can reuse all the accessories (HD, controller, remote, headset) and sell the parts to some kids (power adapters, casing, DVD).

1) mostly true, a reball is the best fix, but most 360's can be fixed more or less permanently without this
2) changing the x clamps is dumb, and a very poor technique. bending them slightly to make them a bit stiffer is much better. changing the thermal paste alone doesn't do shit, you need to reflow the GPU (if that is infact the problem) with a heat gun and some no clean flux or you really aren't fixing anything.
3)anything with the word "trick" after it is a terrible idea and will shorten the life of your 360, not to mention only fix it for a week or so. It can also lead to a worse RROD than your original.
4) true

Also, I should add that the RROD only means that there is a hardware error, you need to pull the secondary code to see what piece of the hardware is causing the error. If the secondary is 0102, it's easy and you can DIY it cheap. Others are a bit more difficult, 0020 and 0022 are near impossible without reballing.

my xBox crapped out on me about 2 months ago... (after 4 years of use and maybe used less than 100 times).. had I known this was going to happen, I would have just gotten a PS3
^#1 is NEVER buy one from a smoker. The gunk from them smoking gets in the 360, gets everywhere, and builds up. It's seriously fucking disgusting to open one up that has been owned by a smoker.
#2 don't buy one over 2 years old (check the build date on the back). Even if the console is registered to someone else, you can phone in and have them transfer the serial number over to you, and you can now warranty it should anything happen.
#3 double check the warranty label, just pop the faceplate off, there's 2 different labels, use google to see what they look like.

technically yes, but the "issues" with the PS3 are down around 3% or something, and for the most part, only with the one, very hot, model of PS3 (the old B/C 80GB). Of those that break, most of the YLOD is caused by the owner not providing sufficient ventilation. Both the YLOD and laser problems can be easily fixed, so far I have had near 100% success with PS3's (albeit I haven't had to fix many), the only one that I couldn't fix had a fried temperature sensor.
