Polar Bear Swim

Just curious if anyone on this board actually goes to the annual Polar Bear Swim?

A bit of info from vancitybuzz:

Quote:

This year marks the 91st annual Vancouver Polar Bear Swim at English Bay. At the beginning of each new year thousands of Vancouverites descend upon English Bay to take a dip in the frigid water. Will you be taking a dip? I know it sounds a little insane, however, each year a record for attendance is broken so it can’t be that bad. Can it?

The Vancouver Polar Bear SwimClub is one of the largest and oldest Polar Bear Clubs in the world. Its initial swim was in 1920 when a small number of hardy swimmers took the plunge into English Bay on New Year’s Day. Led by their founder, Peter Pantages, the swim has grown from around 10 swimmers in that year to the record number of 2,128 official entries in 2000.

The swim takes place at 2:30pm on the first day of each new year. This gives you enough time to struggle out of bed from the night before. Many participants come in costumes so if you want to dress up, by all means do so. The Peter Pantages Memorial 100 yard swim race is the highlight of this event.

To be a club member you must register before the swim. Registration takes place in front of the English Bay Bathhouse from 12:30pm – 2:30pm each New Year’s Day. You may also register by clipping out the coupon in the Province Newspaper and presenting it at the registration desk the day of the swim. Donation of non-perishable food bank items will be accepted.

When: January 1, 2011
Time: 2:30pm
Where: English Bay Bathhouse

I've been to a couple. It's a great way to ring in the New Year. And the water is not really that cold. The adrenaline will keep you warm.

And I guess you've never done anything that has put you in any bit of discomfort in the name of fun?

I thought about doing that this year. Practising by jumping into the pool straight from hot tub and steam room lol

Wow, I didn't think this thread would be such a downer. You probably don't have to do this every year, but I think it's something that every Vancouverite should do at least once in their lifetime. It's cold, but it's a lot of fun. Get dressed up, join in on the polar bear songs, take pictures with your polar bear swim button, etc. If you're going, just be sure to bring a few plastic bags for your gear. Don't bother with flip flops (you'll lose them), but socks with your swim gear are recommended.

I would have been there this year, but I have to work in the afternoon on New Year's Day.

That's no polar bear swim............

They should take people out a mile from shore then make them swim back. Now that, my friends, would be a true polar bear swim.

Then you have a real story you can tell your grandchildren.

punkwax 12-21-2010 09:38 AM

^ If you make it...

yellowpower 12-21-2010 10:03 AM

you'll probably get hella sick and die, then you wont be around to even see your grandchildren lol

ToneCapone 12-21-2010 12:59 PM

When I was younger doing karate every year mid winter we would have a beach practice for about an hour. Then then at the very end we all charge into the water for a quick swim. Its seriously insane but so worth it.

Gotta get back into it one day...
