depends on what car.. if it is a BMW it is going to be a lot of labour.. the parts are cheap.
you won't know which part is damaged (lock cylinder or ignition switch) unless you take it out. If it is ignition lock, you might need to rekey everything or reprogram it.

Berz out. | I was going to suggest this, but a lot of the times when this happens, you usually aren't able to start the car either.

^You mean, you want a price?
Parts and labour, probably anywhere between 300-400.

I've found sometimes with older cars the key has to be in a precise location before coming out. So if the key turned back or forward a little too far it won't come out. I'm talking like 1mm off. When theres wear and tear on the cylinder after so many years the key tends to go back further than normal.
Also some keys won't release if your foot is on the brake or if not in park.

I suggest the OP go to VWortex.. there should be tons of people over there that can help.
DONT drill it out, then you will need to replace the cylinder AND the switch, if the switch is broken.
My suggestion is go to Princess Auto and get a few dental picks, dissemable and remove the lock from the cars (you get better clearance that way). See if you can get the cap off the lock cylinder and attempt to slide the whole thing out. It could be just errant dirty / grease. http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...tion-switch%29

on most cars the key wouldn't come out unless the car is all the way in park. if auto could be something else like a tranny sensor. (not sure how the signal gets from tranny to ign sw)
edit: never mind, if it wasn't in park, it wouldn't start either.

Had this happen on a truck i went to test drive at the dealer. Truck stared fine and drove fine. Got back to the dealer and pulled into the parking spot.
The truck would not shift out of gear the wheel was locked and the key would not turn so we could not turn the truck off. they tried pulling the battery wire but the alternator kept it running hahaha, Damn steering column binding up. Glad this has not happened to me again. wish i could help, but atleast your a few steps ahead of where i was
