good gaming computer?

I haven't built a computer in ages and I've dug around a few forums to see what other ppl have put together for a gaming computer that can support SC2 on high/ultra settings. I been to NCIX and Memory Express and what they keep offering me are deals over $1100 for the rig I'm looking for. like $1,200+ or more

Anyways, I'm trying to construct something on newegg.ca and came up with this and I'm looking for some feedback

All this is suppose to cost $1,100 on newegg.ca though I think there are some parts that could be improved.

I'm not 100% sure these parts are all compatible though. So if any computer expert here know and can let me know, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, I'm not sure if I need anymore cooling fans, or do I even know which ones I need, so if anyone could advise me on that too.

Thanks

Wait until January if you can ;)

OP.. i highly suggest you get new heat sinks.. but for 1100.. it sounds abt right =P

.Renn.Sport 12-23-2010 04:06 AM

u need 3 sticks of ram for i7-950 and u got the wrong socket motherboard

ewong 12-23-2010 04:07 AM

Any recommendation for heat sink?

Something with an LGA1366 socket (& X58 chipset).

For gaming, you're probably overkill with that CPU. You could cut your price down by a few hundred bucks with an I5/P55 system, or you could use that extra cash to a better video card, you would get way more gaming performance that way.

noctuna or cooler master brand are pretty decent

asian_XL 12-23-2010 05:41 PM

no overclock, then use stock heatsink

ewong 12-23-2010 09:30 PM

So I went to NCIX to talk to the rep today to get some comparison on the specs I made. Here's what they suggested.

Core i7 950 3.06 GHZ 8MB processor $299.99

Asus P6X58D-E X58 ATX LGA1366 3PCI-E1 2PCI Crossfire SLI USB3.0 Sata6GB motherboard $229.99

Corsair XMS3 TR3X6G 1600C9 6GB DDR3 ram $82.99

EVGA GeForce GTX 470 Fermi 607 MHZ 1280MB GDDR5 2XDVI Mini-HDMI video card $281.79

Coolmaster Haf 912 black tower $53.99

Corsair 750w power supply $109.99

DVD Writer $19.99

Seagate Barracuda 7200 12 500GB SATA2 HD $39.99

Total cost = $1,252.97

I brought this deal to MemoryExpress and this was their counter

i7 950 3.06GHz 8MB processor $294.99

Asus Sabertooth X58 w/Triple DDR3 1866 7.1 audio, Gigabit Lan, 1394, PCI-E, Quad CrossFireX SLI motherboard $214.99

Muskkin PC3-12800 Silverline DDR3 6GB $64.99

WD 1TB 5400RPM Sata2/64MB HD $69.99

DVD writer $19.99

Corsair 750 watt power supply 134.99 ($109.99 price match)

HIS RADEON HD 5850 iCooler V 1Gb GDDR5 PCI-E w/Dial DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort Video Card $269.99

Zalman Z7 Case $49.99

Total after tax = $1,203.93

So what do you guys think of the deal from Memory Express? You think NCIX will make a counter deal? Anything changes you guys would recommend?

an i5 is more then enough for gaming for a couple years, get a good video card and an SSD drive, that would be more beneficial, no?

rexsomnii 12-23-2010 11:00 PM

yes for SSD.

makes your computer so fricking fast !

buy like a 60 gb SSD , store all your OS on there, anything else just store it on a normal HDD

impactX 12-23-2010 11:21 PM

And you don't need that kind of spec to play SC2 on ultra high settings...

Manic! 12-24-2010 12:08 AM

Maybe i'm out of ther loop but whats up with the $200 plus motherboards?

Also pick up a cheap SSD for the OS. Makes a huge difference.

ewong 12-24-2010 12:18 AM

Dudes I'm confused, looking at SSD online, it seems like an external hd to me.

What's it's purpose?

SSD is essentially a hard drive that dosen't have any moving parts. Think of it as a huge stack of SD cards combined to make 60gb or something - though of course it's not as simple as that, but the concept is similar.

In a regular harddrive you have a stack of disks, and when your computer needs to access a file it needs to physically spin up the drive, and then look for the file (think of how a CD drive works)
Now since your computer's OS needs access to a good handful of these files at any given moment, imagine the time savings with an SSD where you don't need to physically move anything to gain access to a file.

dunno why this thread made me think of this scene.

asian_XL 12-24-2010 07:15 PM

1) WTF, why would they suggest a ATi 5850? get a 6870!

2) forget about i7 950, either wait for a month when i7 2600 (also $294) or get i5 655K CPU

3) you don't need a $200 motherboard for gaming

4) don't get a SSD until mid of next yr. Price is going to drop sharply in Q1 and Q2. It's useless to have a 60gb SSD, I don't find my 128GB SSD useful at all.

Simply - New generation of storage device

Normal spinning HD = Read / write speed around 80-100mb/s
SSD HD = Read / write speed around 120-500mb/s
