North Korea threatens nuclear retaliation if South attacks

POCHEON, South Korea — North Korea threatened Thursday to launch a "sacred" nuclear war against South Korea if it attacks, as Seoul staged military exercises that have raised already high tensions on the peninsula.

The remarks seemed aimed at revving patriotic spirit on the eve of the 19th anniversary of leader Kim Jong Il's appointment as the supreme military commander.

Defense chief Kim Yong Chun said North Korea is "fully prepared to launch a sacred war" -- and would use its nuclear capabilities -- if attacked and warned the South against intruding even the smallest amount on its territory, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

North Korea's anger has been piqued this week by South Korea's staging of live-fire drills on Yeonpyeong Island, which was shelled by the North's artillery on Nov. 23. Four South Koreans were killed.

North Korea has said it shelled the island because South Korea fired artillery into its territorial waters first. South Korea has countered that it fired artillery away from North Korea as part of routine drills.

Earlier Thursday, South Korea conducted its largest air-and-ground firing drills near the tense land border in a show of force against North Korea. The North's state media has called the drills "provocative" and "offensive."

The two Koreas are still technically at war because their 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.

exactly what my Korean friend told me too, he just got back from Korea last month too, basically says it's a common thing down there for them to be bickering, nobody even pays attention to it anymore, nor are they worried about it. Everyday fact of life type of thing, and he was really annoyed seeing all the news coverage and how it was being portrayed especially since he just got back from Korea and it was nothing like that back there, shit wasnt even on front page or anything

The American media is hyping it up like some crazy showdown or whatever, fck what can you expect from them the American media after all eh

CanadaGoose 12-23-2010 07:11 PM

^ Well of course. We all know war = $$$, everyone including the media will exploit it

murd0c 12-23-2010 07:15 PM

Lord of war, man I love that movie

FerrariEnzo 12-23-2010 10:23 PM

just take down NK already... everyone knows the NK isnt gona back down from a fight

LiquidTurbo 12-23-2010 10:25 PM

NK has nukes? NK can't even provide electricity for all its citizens....

Mr.C 12-23-2010 10:37 PM

Because China would obviously want a nuclear warhead going off in the Korean peninsula. Sure. Watch NK launch a nuke and China promptly annihilate NK.

Death2Theft 12-23-2010 11:25 PM

Why? When did China start caring about polution? Radioactive or otherwise.. lolz.

MindBomber 12-23-2010 11:34 PM

Nothing reported by Fox News is legitimate.

that's the scary part, the bomb explodes before it hits SK or it goes to China LOL

Culture_Vulture 12-24-2010 01:13 AM

I for one believe North Korea will go all-out in an armed conflict.

Let's consider the alternative, who actually believes that North Korea, given all the effort it put forth insofar, will simply back out of an armed conflict?

The international political economy has developed to such a stage where no amount of sucking China's dick will be of any benefit to North Korea. Any economic or social stimulus plan (as if they would ever be able to fund one independently) applied to its current regime is just beating a dead horse.
And with a conservative what, 70 thousand American troops scattered around the East China Sea and the Sea of Japan?

If I were the small-man syndrome state known as North Korea, I'd at least prefer to go down swinging.

hmmm.....anyone else think NK would do a nuclear scorched earth on it's own soil if encircled by SK, US, etc?

nuking a neighbour is stupid, it's pretty much suicide.

rsx 12-24-2010 10:08 AM

North Korea is so fucking annoying!!! Attack or shutup, stop trying to get attention. Trying to get political clout through threats? Fucking idiots. I really hope China and the West team up and attack that shit hole and split up the territories accordingly.

Split up? Nah. If China does anything it will be annex it or something.

Or even better, give it back to SK, lol. Yeah, that would be funny. 'Here South Korea, you can reunite with the North. It needs a bit of TLC, but hey, that's your problem now!'.

mr_chin 12-24-2010 12:28 PM

China would never allow NK to nuke SK if it poses environmental danger to China.

Death2Theft 12-24-2010 01:15 PM

I thought China supported communism.
