| Shanghai/Nanjing
Posted this in the Travel section but I got no replies at all. So I'm leaving for Shanghai/Nanjing Jan 4th and was just wondering if anyone has any personal experiences there, and places/things I should definitely see. Does anyone know any good markets to buy fake things? Rub and tugs? Hahahaha Thanks!

Case in point, this skinny guy comes into the gym the other day, must have only weighed ~ 140lbs, loads on 2 plates on the bench rack, mutters to himself, for sparta, unracks the barbell and proceeds to drop it directly on his chest.

fake shit is everywhere. remember to bargain, bargain bargain. if they won't flinch, just say you'll go to the next stall. prices will be hella inflated because you look like a foreigner.

you are going to the wrong side of that country if you are aiming to buy fake stuff.
Oh, if you are white or cannot speak FLUENT mandarin, expect to pay 2-3x more than local mainlanders would pay.
I was checking out the watch that a white guy was about to buy. The store owner said $1600RMB in English to that white guy, then I asked him how much would I have to pay....
$380RMB
The white guy paid and he was like |

For street or night market kinda place, I usually start at 1/20.
I was checking a jacket last year and I asked the chick how much it was, she told me 500, I said this ain't worth 500, 25 should be more accurate (similar jacket was around 100 on taobao)... I ended up paying 65 for it.

nanjing
-sun yat sen mausoleum, this guy is known as the father of modern china. there's also a ming tomb nearby
-you can find the ancient city wall still in-tact of the original city which dates back to the ming dynasty
-yangtze river bridge
shanghai
-nanjing road, big shopping street, TONS of people.
-if you like dumplings/dimsum, make sure you go to the well-known restaurant ding tai fung in xian tin di
-take a boat cruise in the evening, the city is gorgeous at night
-and like others have said, go to the bund area to view some amazing architecture, you can get some great shots of the pu dong skyline there as well
-expo ended, but the china pavillion is gonna stay there forever.

Nanjing
Massacre Museum. Tip: That thing is closed on Mondays. Found out the hard way.
Yangtze River Bridge
Dr. Sun Yat Sen - there's the Mausoleum that's a bit out of the way, as well as an actual museum (the old HQ) that's within the city.
South Gate - where thousands of Chinese were trampled/killed when the government fled (incoming Japanese) and locked all gates to the city wall except for this one. Very sad actually.
Shanghai
World Financial Centre - pay the extra and go to Level 100. You can literally look downwards at the Jin Mao and Oriental Pearl towers. (the latter 2 aren't worth seeing anymore for this reason)
National Museum (sp?) lots of artifacts if you're into that kind of stuff.
Bund - there's some monorail-type thing that goes underneath the river in both directions, but it closes early.

Shanghai:
TV tower (Pearl)
xujiahui (tech district, shopping)
huaihai road (old french district? I think...)
Fuzhou road, right beside nanjing road. There's a very old restaurant there, and damn it's awesome.
Be careful of beggars, pickpockets, and scammers. TONS out there, it's ridiculous. If you need to keep in touch with people, get a $50/$100 phone sim card, and shove it into your unlocked phone. A lot of people in Shanghai speak the local dialect, mandarin may or may not help you depending.
I get my money exchanged at Crystal Mall beforehand, saves some hassle.
Have fun haha

when you buy stuff...
say you go to a market.
the closet stall in the market will have products that are more expensive then stalls further in. so do NOT buy stuff right away and just wait as i guarantee you will find the exact same product a few stalls down.

if you go to a Xiao Long Bao place that has a line up inside of a tourist place - its the worst. People say that its the best, but its crap. The skin is super thick and the damn thing could kill someone if you threw it at them.

You can skip the line by going to the higher priced level ie via elevator + the stairs.. you need to order more of the same, but the sitting is better.
I don't find the food that bad.
There is also a retro restaurants where you sit in box cars next to one of the computer shopping malls.
Stay at the Peninsula on the Bund.. the price is ridiculously cheap... in case you need any consular help, the Canadian embassy is at the Ritz Carlton complex. Quote:

i've lived in nanjing for about 10 yrs, went back to visit 2 yrs ago. i recommend visiting the museums which are the presidential palace, taiping kingdom museum, and nanjing massacre museum. those are all pivotal moments in chinese history. seeing actual artifacts was really enlightening.
you can safely skip the parks and maloseums if you've seen your share of them from other cities in china. they look exactly alike whichever you go. at night you should definately check out the 1912 district. lots of bars/clubs/ktv packed any day of the week, met alota ppl and had many fun nights there.
