Driver Distractions on N

ICBC website:

Quote:
Restricted from using both hand-held and hands-free cellphones and portable electronic devices while driving or riding. The GLP hands-free restriction is lifted for riding if no valid class 7 or 7L licence is held.
Does this include use of a GPS?

For N drivers, yes, you can't touch anything that can compute data or is classified as an electronic device (a definition outlined by the MVA and ICBC). So you better not be doing math on your calculator while driving!

However, anyone, INCLUDING N drivers who have pre-programmed their GPS for their destination before putting the vehicle in operation can use it, hands-free, legally. So yes, GPS's are allowed for all drivers if you aren't programming them on the go. Looking or listening to it for the sake of directions is acceptable.
