1990 civic speedo problems, never touched a honda before

Alright so I have a "lady friend" whos speedo stopped working it is a 1990 honda civic 5 speed, it had been working and died recently as well i get to work on said car

Is it a typical cable goingto the transmission from the dash cluster or am i looking at something else? I know nothing about civics let alone hondas

what should i be looking at, I was told that 92 and newer have a sensor located somewhere under the airfilter box, is this true with the 90's aswell

thanks in advance

is the car a cx/dx or an si?

i have a 88-89 cx cluster and a 90 dx cluster as spares. you're welcome to try one of them out to see if it's the cluster itself malfunctioning.

i know the car is blue hehe, i can find out tomorow, she is at work for the evening. all the other guages work just fine, are the guage clusters a problem on these cars.

we are out in chiliwack so I am thinking i may go to pick n pull and do some scouting for parts and as much on hand knowledge I can get while im not fishing. I will be tearing into the car on sunday.

This is the only thing that I am unsure on everything else I need to do is pretty simple, well except that its a honda and not a semi, i asume my hands are going to hurt from working on this lil car

Speedo cable is mounted from the tranny to the cluster. It's located right in front of the firewall going into the tranny. Unclip it, make sure it isn't busted and is fit snug into the trans.

well, if you end up taking off the cluster (for w/e reason), there's 4 screws to remove:

2 are in front and beneath the cluster surround. the other 2 are near the back of the cluster (towards the windshield) and are hidden under two plastic tabs that you pop off. make sure you don't drop these last two screws cuz it's a bitch to fish them out. use a magnetic tool to pull them up when loose if you have one.

other than the screws, there are 3 plugs: defroster, dimmer, and hazard lights. dimmer plug is a bit of a bitch to pull off, try using a flathead to push the tab in.
