The plants were angry with the pollution so they sent out chemicals that made the birds kill themselves.

Live energy weapon testing?
Would totally make sense to me, small, fairly fast moving targets.

Fireworks may be cause of mass bird deaths
Updated 9 minutes ago

US officials believe at least 1,000 dead birds found in a small Arkansas town may have been frightened to death by fireworks.

Local residents woke on New Year's Day to find their town blanketed with dead birds, which fell over a two-kilometre radius.

Wildlife experts do not know why dead birds were not found anywhere else, but they are speculating that they could have been hit by lightning or high-altitude hail.

An Arkansas state ornithologist said they showed signs of trauma and noted similar events have occurred elsewhere.

Authorities started getting calls that birds were falling to earth and about 30 minutes before midnight on New Year's Eve.

They are wondering if revellers setting off fireworks could have startled the creatures from their roost and caused them to die from stress.

Meanwhile about 200 kilometres away, officials say 100,000 fish have died in the north-west of Arkansas.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission says the bodies of drum fish were found along a 30-kilometre stretch of the Arkansas River.

^ haha, I was just about to post that it could have been due to firework explosions! It's been well documented that fireworks can kill birds! Like to see a human try it!

fish prolly died because of all the shit they dumped in the ocean (running up river) to clear the BP Oil Rig spill

there have been a tonne of major fish kills in the area since the cleaning process i remember that really fat guy (the mayor?) on CNN screaming about the oil rig spill 24/7 talking about it but it didnt get much exposure
