New driver rating: M for mature

Abbotsford police unveiled an M for Mature Driver sign Wednesday, similar to the letter L sign used by learners.

But baby boomers need not worry: the signs were only meant as a stunt to spark discussion, said Const. Ian Mac-Donald.

"Although this is a mock sign and it's done somewhat tongue in cheek, we're dealing with a really serious issue," he said.

MacDonald said an examination of recent crashes showed the average age of the drivers involved in 22 fatal collisions in Abbotsford in the last two years was 40. No teens were killed in traffic accidents during that time.

That trend appears counter to the most recent ICBC data. While drivers aged 16 to 21 years make up only eight per cent of all drivers in B.C., the insurance company said they were involved in 18 per cent of fatal collisions.

Dave Dunne of the B.C. Automobile Association's Traffic Safety Foundation said "middle-aged drivers need to be vigilant when it comes to driving behaviour.

"We can never let our defences down."

"M Sign..."
That's a pretty good one.

Maybe it was really meant to stand for "Male Driver"

I've been saying this for years, they should have an "S" sign for seniors.

I like the idea. Gives me more time to determine if the guy in front is slimy bag of dicks at driving. One time someone this old shit down to a stop at a green light and waited for it to turn yellow..

Old people are way more dangerous. Those 70+ year olds in cars that they can't see out of, drive at 25 and still can't signal or change lanes in anything less than a kilometer.
