Arizona congresswoman among 18 shot

Arizona congresswoman among 18 shot at Tucson grocery

Six people were killed and 12 others wounded -- including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords -- in a shooting outside a Tucson, Arizona, grocery store where the congresswoman was holding a constituent meeting, police said.

The suspect in the shooting was in custody, according to U.S. Capitol Police, who did not identify the alleged gunman.

Darci Slaten, a spokeswoman for University Medical Center in Tucson, said Giffords, 40, was undergoing surgery Saturday afternoon for a gunshot wound to the head.

Local law enforcement officials have not provided a public accounting of the injuries, but President Obama called the shooting an "unspeakable tragedy," and said "some have passed away," according to a statement from the White House. He said Giffords was "gravely wounded."

A federal judge from Arizona was among the victims, though the judge's condition was unknown, a law enforcement source told CNN.

The shooting happened shortly after 10 a.m. MST at a Safeway grocery store, Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jason Ogan said.

Giffords, 40, was holding a constituent meeting at the store when the shooting occurred, according to a schedule posted on her website.

An FBI spokesman said the agency was sending agents to the scene, and two senior Obama administration officials said the White House is monitoring the situation. They said they believed that a congressional staffer may have been killed.

Pictures from the scene showed a Giffords banner hanging from the storefront.

At least two victims with gunshot wounds were transported at Northwest Medical Center, according to spokesman Richard Parker.

The motive for the shooting is unclear, Ogan said.

"We're just trying to sort this out right now," he said.

An employee of a nearby business, Jason Pekau, told CNN that he did not see the shooting, but heard "15 to 20 gunshots."

Giffords, a Democrat, was first elected in 2006. She has served as chairwoman of the House Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee and also holds seats on the House Science and Technology and Armed Services committees.

She won her third term in a closely contested race against a Tea Party-sponsored candidate and was one of three Democratic legislators who reported vandalism at their offices following the March vote on health care reform.

She is married to Navy Capt. Mark Kelly, a NASA astronaut who is scheduled to lead a space shuttle mission to the International Space Station.

Obama said information about the shooting was continuing to flow in.

"We do not yet have all the answers," he said. What we do know is that such a senseless and terrible act of violence has no place in a free society."

House Speaker John Boehner said he was "horrified" by the shooting.

"An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve," he said. "Acts and threats of violence against public officials have no place in our society."

CNN's Dana Bash and Nick Valencia contributed to this report.

Despite being shot in the head, the congresswoman is alive and currently recovering from surgery in the intensive care unit of a hospital in her district. The bullet went through her brain, but the surgeon is very optimistic given the situation.

Currently 6 of the 18 victims have been killed, among the dead is a 9 year old girl.

If only this would make Americans realize, the right to keep and bear arms is a dated relic of their revolutionary war.

Its too late now. If you outlaw guns only outlaws will have guns.
There are far too many weapons available in the United States to repeal the second amendment without complete chaos. What they need is better screening for the mentally unfit. The Virginia Tech massacre is a perfect example of this.

Right now there are millions of weapons in the possession of Americans who are responsible owners. You don't see them going on killing sprees.

Arizona.... I have a feeling it's got more to do with some angry illegal immigrant over the new immigration laws

adambomb 01-08-2011 04:02 PM

FoxNews: "There is no indication that this is a terrorist attack."
Read: The suspect is not muslim. :speechless:

Media reports identified the suspected gunman as Jared Loughner, 22, of Arizona. :gun:

And those pics Manic! posted. Well...

"In the minutes following the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) and members of her staff, the website operated by Sarah Palin that illustrated Gifford's 8th district with gun crosshairs drawn on a map was scrubbed from the internet."

It's not stupid Americans, it's stupid Republicans. You don't see Democrats bringing guns to Republican political rallies and threatening Republican nominees.

The Republicans of today are so fucking stupid and ideological that they are nothing like the Republicans of old. Traditional Conservatives believed in conservatism insofar as to preserve traditions that worked, that is, their focus was on pragmatism, on reality. They did not abhor change like the Republican bigots of today. Traditional Conservatives understood the need for change and improvement, what they were afraid of was what they termed "revolution"- that is, drastic change based on unproven utopian dreams i.e. Communism. The key point is that the Republican Party and Traditional Conservatism was built around pragmatism, anchored in reality.

Today's Republicans and Tea Party fundamentals are nothing like the Conservatives of yore. They are imbeciles and bigots and have been manipulated by the elite to vote for policies that serve only the ultra-rich, typified by the Republican Party's zealous pursuit in cutting taxes. Republicans have become so ideological that they've lost complete touch with reality. The policies they support have nothing to do with "good governance" or preserving the "delicate social fabric," cornerstones of Traditional Conservatism. Modern Republicans are dangerously simple minded. Their modus-operandi is: "government is evil" and "less government is the best government;" regardless of the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Anyone that disagrees are "unpatriotic," "against liberty," hippies, or worse "liberals." This overly simplistic ideology mixed with the daily hate-filled vitriol coming from the likes of Glen Beck, Bill O'Riely and Fox News et. al. is a dangerous and frightening combination. (There is already preliminary evidence indicating that this was a politically motivated assassination in that the shooter was staunchly anti-healthcare reform while the Democratic victims supported the bill) With the current political landscape in mind, I suspect there will be a lot more politically motivated violence in the near future.

In the Land of the Free, only Muslims can be categorized as terrorists.

StylinRed 01-09-2011 06:47 AM

Was watching CNN and some Republican congressman was defending Palin and was painting the shooter as an American hating Communist Fascist "he read Karl Marx and read Hitler and burned the American Flag"

Mindbomber, people die all the time including childeren. Yes it's sad, but it's nothing new.

MindBomber 01-09-2011 09:46 AM

The gun was wrestled away from the shooter by a woman who had already been shot.
