lucky me, i was just going to make a thread asking this. looks like my linksys wr54gsomething something (wireless g) router/switch is about toast. the wireless is at best... crap! my secondary throttled network on my old linksys wirelessB router is still going strong! so im in the market for a new router. not that it should matter, though i had a nightmare finding a decent wireless adapter for win7 64bit that actually works like its advertised to, a router/switch shouldnt have any issues.. i hope. i have 3 wired systems, and a good 1/2 dozen wireless connections so from reading everyones review, the dlink router is pretty decent huh? |
^ The dlinks are pretty solid. But honestly, unless you have new N devices you wanna hook up, you could get another WRT54G, and be back surfing with no problems. |
The D-Link itself is great but the range isn't as good. For my basement suite it's perfect. I hear the Asus RT-N16 is pretty good processing hardware too and you can flash DDRWT on it. |
Nothing has changed in the past year or so. Dir-655 is the best router if you want to stick with stock firmware, no hassle and easy to set up. Rt-n16 is the best router if you want to put a custom firmware, play with vpn server, usb nas support, etc. Both are rock solid and offer decent range. Slap on the antenna from the previous page for an even better reception. |
DIR-825 is a great dual-band unit, that's also WRT-able. |
DIR-825 is decent, but reading alot of reviews and comparison. I opted for netgear wndr37AV. So far no problems, download speed (speedtest.net) on 5.8ghz band is 14.92mps ( i live in the basement, router is on main floor). |
Dir655 is on sale at Anitec for $69 if anyone is still looking. http://www.anitec.ca/product/9420/d-...mo/saj92jasop3 Posted via RS Mobile |
Got a cisco/linksys? valet plus wireless N router due to a best buy shipping error that I can let go for cheap, supposed to be super easy to set up, |
WRT-54GL by Linksys, Paired it with the Tomato firmware. What I like about it is you can control how strong you want your wi-fi signal to be, I dont think you can do that with any other router. Also added a pair of stronger antennas and you got a killer combo for 50bucks. |
DD-WRT lets you control the signal strength, as well as nearly every other aspect of the signal. |
I use dlink dir-655, works fine. I have 2 computers, 2 laptops, 3iphone/ipods, and a ps3 connected to it, never had any problems unless i'm torrenting something like 1080p avatar; that would be a bandwidth problem anyways. tl;dr dir-655 is a great router, buy it. |
As the thread covers though, it really depends on what you want from your router. DIR-655 is a great router, but is missing a lot of advanced features like WDS and VPN support. You can add things like that to a number of routers by flashing DD-WRT or other third-party firmware; however, DIR-655 doesn't support most or any other firmwares. |
