Scientists trying to clone mammoth

Instead of Jurassic Park, try Pleistocene Park.

A team of scientists from Japan, Russia and the United States hopes to clone a mammoth, a symbol of Earth’s ice age that ended 12,000 years ago, according to a report in Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun. The researchers say they hope to produce a baby mammoth within six years.

The scientists say they will extract DNA from a mammoth carcass that has been preserved in a Russian laboratory and insert it into the egg cells of an African elephant in hopes of producing a mammoth embryo.

The team is being led by Akira Iritani, a professor emeritus at Kyoto University in Japan. He has built upon research from Teruhiko Wakayama of Kobe's Riken Center for Developmental Biology, who successfully cloned a mouse from cells that had been frozen for 16 years, to devise a technique to extract egg nuclei without damaging them, according to the Yomiuri report.

The U.S. researchers are in vitro fertilization experts. They, along with Kinki University professor Minoru Miyashita, will be responsible for implanting the mammoth embryo into an African elephant, the report said.

"If a cloned embryo can be created, we need to discuss, before transplanting it into the womb, how to breed [the mammoth] and whether to display it to the public," Iritani told Yomiuri. "After the mammoth is born, we'll examine its ecology and genes to study why the species became extinct and other factors."

I was going to post that exact same picture!!!

Jurasic Park isn't to far away or even far fetched anymore!!

Berz out.

The scary part is what have they been cloneing that we don't even know about? I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they could clone humans like in the movie the island.

So, the solution to the rapidly approaching extinction of many currently living arctic animals, such as polar bears, is cloning an arctic animal that humans hunted to extinction 12,000 years ago...

Jurassic Park is my all time favourite movie and Snufalufagus is my favourite sesame street character, but there are higher priorities in the world... just my thoughts.

Fuck off.

Wait a second... are you implying that it wouldn't be hard to clone a stupid person (ie Mugen Evolution) or were you calling him stupid?

either way, its stupid:devil:

Jegz 01-17-2011 02:22 PM

Jurassic Park in 2050!!

dlo 01-17-2011 03:21 PM

:lol jurassic park was on last night too

what??? unless its totally deformed (which i doubt it will be since its just a hairy elephant) why would they need to Discuss it -_-

China should start cloning Pandas and selling them as pets (thats been on my list of things to get when im ridiculously rich for ages :))

No, like saving the species in danger of extinction now.

If your going to quote me, at least make the comment intelligent.

that's the thing, these scientists aren't striving to save an endangered species. their goal is to do what hasn't been done before. i do see your point though and perhaps in the future this will be something they focus on. plus, it's humans who screw things up the most regarding endangered species. even if you create more, poachers who continue to kill these animals are the major problem.

oh, and fuck yeah! mammoths! :D

124Y 01-17-2011 04:44 PM

This is more awesome than a cloned mammoth.

Do you have any understanding of incentives make the world go round?

You think these scientists are better off spending their time trying to save an endangered species? Sure, their interests maybe part of that effort in their spare time but in the real scope of life, their interests and incentives lie in cloning a mammoth, for the purposes of exemplifying what can be done with cloning techonology and the branches of genetic and health advents it can create.

Do you think this will not eventually trickle down somewhere?

Your argument is about as good as telling NASA to stop sending shit into space because there's no war going on up there while human civilization is at stake via terrorist and civil strife.

If the scientists viewed that saving endangered species was more worth while, they'd surely divert their effort into that regards. Just like how you're on RS instead of in a soup kitchen.

:stfu:

These scientists are not saving current species, they are ressurecting an extinct one. Guess what? If this works, they could apply this research and technology to save other species that do go extinct in the future.

Please feel free to run for government with a platform of banning research that you deem irrevelant.

Back to the story...that is pretty cool. I hope i'm still alive if they're ever able to clone dinosaurs or any other ancient creatures.

anyone else think we should set limits and boundaries on this kind of researches from the world before it gets out of control?
