A Tribute to Gretzky: Turns 50 on Wednesday!

TSN has a feature on the Great One since he turns 50 on Wednesday. Here's the link:

http://www.tsn.ca/50greatones/

And just food for thought to those that always argue about how he played in a different era:

Look at Gretzky's scoring feats on a per year basis comparing his points total to the next player in the scoring race (eliminates the "era" argument because you compare Gretzky to a player in the same year).

1982: Gretzky-215pts vs Bossy-141pts (+52%)
1983: Gretzky-205pts vs Coffey-126pts (+63%)
1984: Gretzky-208pts vs Kurri-135pts (+54%)
1985: Gretzky-215pts vs Lemieux-141pts (+52%)

Gretzky averaged 55% higher in points per season to the next player. That's pure domination. To see what this means, the equivalent today with current scoring leader Stamkos at 67 points means he would have to be sitting at 104 points with Crosby sitting 2nd at 66pts! Absolutely insane.

yeah... got annoyed after 3 videos... too many commercial.
If they were smart, they would have just made it so you can just watch all the videos in a row in one sitting...

When it's put that way, it is pretty crazy...

At that rate, he would theoretically be able to get about 170 points in this era.

Click the "Video Library" tab, all the videos are under the 50 great ones cat. Add to lineup all the vids.

no one even gets 140 points these days so i'd say it still is relevant to the era..

+1 to hondaracer

Back then players weren't as fast and strong as they are now. Goalies are as good back then as they are now. Bigger pads and padding makes the goalie look bigger and the net smaller.

Different era, different style of play.

The standup style is inferior to hybrid. So even if it's not bigger equipment,
the goalie's techniques weren't as efficient.

It always makes me when I see a slapshot and the goalie just stands there and kicks a feet.

Yes, but the fact of the matter is Gretzky was getting more than 50% more points than the next closest guy...

"When asked about 92 goal season, Gretzky says he remembers he only had something like 1 goal in his last 8 games. In his opinion, he "blew it" and had a shot at 100 goals."

1 goal in 8 games? Inconsistent and lazy player for sure. Leeched off line mates his whole career.

No wonder he got traded.

Great coach though.
