Speed Gun Accuracy w/ 2 Cars Side by Side?

Are those cops speed gun accurate if they are shooting at 2 vehicles traveling side by side?

Got pulled over a few days ago in a 70 zone...
the cops said I was going at 85..(he was inside his vehicle the whole time...so I guess he used a speed gun from inside his car?)

Only thing is...I was traveling side by side with another vehicle the whole time..and I am on the further away lane from the cop. I was traveling 5-10km/h faster than the other vehicle.

Is this a good ground for dispute?
The cop only gave me a $40 (10/km over) ticket...but I had a very clean driving record and this ticket could cost me over $2000 more insurance next year. (i am on the east coast...so 1 speeding ticket affect insurance rate a lot)

Get disclosure to see if it was radar or laser and what other evidence he has. Lasers are target-specific instruments (ie. if he pointed it at you, he got your speed).

If he got the other car at 85 and you were going 5-10 faster than the other car (not hard to tell visually), all he'll have to say is "I got Car A at 85 and Car B was going faster than Car A. Therefore, its only reasonable to assume that Car B was going at least 85 in a 70"

If you ask me, the only good reason to dispute a charge is if you weren't guilty of it in the first place.

Because never has an insurance company been in bed with a laser gun manufacturer. And never has an operator made an error in using the gun. And never has a gun malfunctioned.

Because never has a driver actually drove over the speed limit. And never had a Police Officer actually rightfully stopped a speeder. And never had a knowing offender try to get out of a ticket they deserved.

And never has sebberry suffered under the assumption that a cop actually knew what he was doing.

I got 3 vehicles under my name with a perfectly clean record...
1 speeding ticket vs 0 tickets makes a huge difference on insurance in the east coast. (20-30%)

still gonna dispute it just hope the cop doesn't show up...

It's going to take a long time to get a court date to dispute the ticket. By then if you're still in BC you would have to have switched your insurance anyway.

coming back from new west on the patullo i was able to "detect" the radar from about 50m after the bridge started while they were hidden behind a bush that now has the big Patterson advertisement screen in front of it

I can't figure how he got a $40 speeding ticket in BC where the minimum for up to 20 over is $138.

He didn't say he was in the East Coast...only that the ticket there would mean an increase there. He is on a BC website and for all we know, they may consider BC tickets as grounds for jacking the rates there. I know when I moved from back on the east coast to BC I had to provide ICBC with a copy of my driver's abstract from Nfld. to get a ICBC rate reflecting a lack of tickets there. If he is "back east' then anything we tell him might not apply there as they have different traffic laws there and different court processes.

Soundy...you win...I'm too old and exhausted from teaching 6 new drivers how to parallel park today that I'll admit to being senile too. Next time I'll read between the lines.

Still wondering why he is asking a BC website for Ontario traffic law advice?

Given he's got nearly 1300 posts and lists his location as "Van", I'd say he's either a visiting, transplanted, or displaced long-time RSer Plus, the original question was regarding the accuracy of the speed guns... something I'd assume would be the same in most of Canada (except maybe the black hole known as Toronto, where the laws of physics no longer apply, or that alternate universe known as Quebec).
