Using Giftcards At Restaurants?

Ive always wondered when using a giftcard at restaurants, if you just put the card down as cash and if needed add cash accordingly

or do you inform your waiter and he brings back a new bill with the discounted amount? and you pay on top of that?

What do you guys usually do? Just wondering if there is a proper way, thanks!

Uh, I would put the giftcard plus some extra cash together. So you don't really want the waitress going back and forward instead of making one trip and giving you back the change.

I would let the waiter process the gift card first, just in case there is something wrong with it.

I usually have the waiter/waitress process the gift card. Make sure there's no issues like InvisibleSoul said.
