recommend a phone. Android under $150

I was set to find LG optimus T for T-mobile but most of them sell for $250

now can anyone suggest a good / reasonably good android phone for less than $150?

for provider I'd like to stick with fido, rogers, wind or mobilicity

any suggestions? thanks

LG optimus gets a lot of rave , but you will have to source it from ebay unfortunately

I rather try to get something locally than ebay if I could

Depends if your budget of $150 is for contract or not.

Without contract subsidy, there really isnt much "good" Android phones out there...

Too old. You're probably gonna have to either spend more $ or sign a contract. Why don't you just try ordering an LG Optimus off contract. It's only $199 and then get it unlocked.

Yeah that's a good choice too

Although you're pretty much dead in water for android updates. Relying on ppl to port new OS over. If that's not a big deal to him this is good:

Any particular reason why it has to be an Android phone? Many other alternatives within your budget.

You can find a decent HTC Hero on Craigslist for <$150. HTC Magic is a bit cheaper ~$130

with the news saying android sales are going like crazy I don't see why not an android?

what other phone do you have in mind that is within the budget? ($150, $200 ish tax in)

browsing experience is really important to me.
I know I won't use it as much as I thought. but the time when I need it , it just has to be good

I would have gone with the 9300 curve 3g if browsing wasn't an issue...

Honestly at that budget off contract, you're not going to get a satisfying experience with Android.

I owned the HTC Magic since Aug 2008 up until last month, and have worked on HTC Hero and other older Android phones. At this point you'll hate yourself for buying either. Feel free to disagree with me, but these phones tend to lag hard when hitting content-rich web sites, and have poor performance with many of the apps you'll wish you could be using.

Save an extra $100 or $200 or get on/renew a contract, and you won't have buyer's remorse. In fact, you'll find yourself using the phone for things you'd normally have to do on desktop.

Agreed. I've got a G1 rooted and love it for what it is but it doesn't do general surfing too well. It's slow and a bit frustrating at times. Native apps for displaying content are pretty good though. Things like the xda apps for that forum, pulse news reader for graphical display of feeds or google reader for any RSS feed. Android phones with ARMv7 processors are awesome though. Nexus 1 or Nexus S etc... I've used an N1 for a bit and thought that was good enough to replace my laptop for light surfing. Quick lookups on wikipedia and such. Studying off PDF's while on the bus is pretty good too. N1's seem to be in the 300 range off contract if you're willing to go to EBay.

I wouldn't buy either a G1 or Magic with the intent of updating the ROM. I've run everything from Android 1.5 Cupcake to 2.2 Froyo ROMs. After 6 months of bouncing around every other week I've simply settled on 1.6 Donut as the least frustrating for daily use. 2.1 Eclair runs alright but was a bit too slow to really make me want to use the extra features and the overhead it introduced in normal items like calling and texting left me tapping my foot a couple times before typing out a message. Swype wasn't really that good due to response time as well. ARMv6 devices like these are just falling behind too far to make using the latest ROMs any fun beyond the experience of getting it to work. Can't remember exact numbers but there's about a tenfold performance difference between a G1/Magic and an Nexus. 3.6 linpack score compared to 40-ish. Exact numbers change depending on things like ROM used, JIT on/off, compressed cache etc...

If your budget is strictly under 150 then by all means that could get you a G1 or Magic in good shape with money left for a class 6 sd card. It'll get the job done but won't wow you or anything.

It really depends on how you use it though, beyond a couple of apps and general phone-y stuff I only use mine as an access point for my netbook. In that regard it works perfectly.

32A boards are the ones with more RAM, if I remember right only engineering G1's ever came with that. Magics from Rogers all came with that but require EBI1 kernals if you're flashing a new ROM. 32B boards are generally more compatible with all the things you'll see on XDA Developers. Don't know if the extra RAM is worth it, you can run swap on an external card if necessary.

If you're really going to play around with it xda-developers is going to be your new homepage. Perhaps have a look now and see what people are doing with your phones of interest in the Android Development sections?

^ Magic 32A lost a ton of devs over the past year. Everyone is pretty much writing for 32B/G1, or has moved on to newer devices.

Acer Liquid E is another option, they're going for next to nothing on contract, they go for around $200 on Craigslist, and you can probably bargain it down too.
