$2598 and 42 Points for Speeding Ticket

A 20-year-old man was pulled over in Montreal early Friday morning for allegedly driving more than three times the speed limit in a BMW sport utility vehicle.

Sgt. Genevieve Bruneau of the Surete du Quebec told CTV.ca the young man was clocked at 240 kilometres per hour, in a 70 km/h zone.

The man was travelling on Highway 720 at about 3 a.m. when he passed by police officers conducting a speed monitoring operation.

The driver pulled over as soon as police pulled out behind him, and came to a stop just before the entrance to the Ville Marie Tunnel.

Bruneau said police issued a ticket for $2,598, suspended the man's license and had the vehicle towed.

He also received 42 demerit points. After 15 points, drivers in Quebec are effectively unable to obtain or maintain a licence.

Bruneau would not confirm nor deny reports that the man works as a valet at a nearby hotel.

"The only thing I can tell you is that we gave him a ticket, but we are not currently investigating a theft," she said.

Bruneau said new laws in Quebec allow police to double set fines and demerit points when excessive speeds are reached, such as in this case.

Officers are also able to immediately suspend the driver's license for seven days.

Police can impose even harsher penalties on a second offence.

Jesus christ, at 240km/hr already, might as well kept going to give a good GTA style car chase :fullofwin:

Euro7r 02-04-2011 12:55 PM

Shiet, that's a hefty fine along with all the points. $2598, that's like a year and a half of car insurance payments for me haha.

I'm thinking he was driving an X5M.

Because in Montreal, X5M drives you.

What happens if you're involved in a police chase in bc. What are the penaltys?

tbh, I wouldn't of stopped. Unless the cop car is a special one it aint going to catch something going 240km. But the kid is 20 and french so that aint going to help.

MrGoodbar 02-04-2011 01:30 PM

the kid is french, he surrendered to authority, history repeated itself right then and there

in reality, $2500 is nothing for 42 points worth of infractions

42 points, holy fuck.....

kinda harsh.

Nightwalker 02-04-2011 02:44 PM

So that's what will happen to me one day...

42 points is like another $2100

xpl0sive 02-04-2011 02:50 PM

acutally in BC, 42 points = $16,160

But the biggest speeding ticket you can get is excessive speeding which is up to $483...

Nightwalker 02-04-2011 02:55 PM

Oh, I didn't realize that with more points they cost more $.

I have a bill on my desk for 6 points and it's $300, so I just multiplied it.

CharlieH 02-04-2011 03:18 PM

that's not even that bad. aren't the laws in ontario much stricter than that? my friend got caught going 180 on the highway and got slapped with a $11000 fine.

Yup, the fine for going 50+ is up to 10K with immediate suspension and impoundment of your vehicle for 7 days.

CanadaGoose 02-04-2011 03:26 PM

LOL some of the replies in this thread are gold

I dunno, for some reason I don't really care that he was going 240km/h at 3am...I'm more interested if it was even his vehicle because they say he may actually be a valet

geeknerd 02-04-2011 03:48 PM

2600$ not bad for going 240km/h.
excessive speeding here in van costs
about 1.5k$ ... only 1000$ more for 240km???? not bad lol

MindBomber 02-04-2011 05:51 PM

I'd just like to know what exactly all 42 points were assigned for?

The most points you can be assigned in BC for a single offence is 10, but even those are all criminal offences.

storms 02-04-2011 05:57 PM

Ya this was just on the news He is a Valet, and the BMW that is not even his was impounded. The owner of BMW is a guest at the hotel where said Valet worked!!

Phil@rise 02-04-2011 06:08 PM
