I sprayed my old sideskirts which I'm not using anymore just for the hell of it and to see how it would look compared to body shop. It came out looking great but obviously no prep work or anything was done, I just wanted to see how it looks.

Something about the way they mix it at Lordco it makes the paint and everything come out so evenly that it looks almost professionally done, and typically with off the shelf spray paint it's almost impossible to have that shit come out even and smooth.



You should try Benjamin Moore and other paint stores like ICI Paints and others as well, I know Benjamin Moore carries quite a selection, and did you try going to that huge Canadian Tire on Grandview ??

if all that fails I would personally have no problems just showing a picture to a Lordco paint guy and have him mix a custom mix, the best paint guy from Lordco I seen is the guy on Marine, he knows his shit.
Also keep in mind that Dupli Color you posted in the pic is a matte bronze so dont forget to tell Lordco paint guy that cuz when they mix they add clearcoat in it

can i just use any spraybomb to paint my rims? cuz ici does have a nice bronze i like. or should i use special automotive clear, paint and primer?

i would prep,prime,paint then clear. If you just spray it theres a chance it will flake off after awhile.

It also depends on how picky you are. Since the OP wants bronze which has metallic flakes in it and you will probably want to go several layers; you might want to just get a cheapo $40 HVLP sprayer and just get the paint instead. Paint from different spray paint bottles might come out differently just due to the way the propellant were added. Not to mention Mother Nature and your wallet will thank you.

When you consider that places like Summit Tools sells a cast iron 21 Gallon compressor for 169 bucks.. I am surprised not more people go for the HVLP route.. Or at least rent group rent a paint booth from KMS.

You don't even need to shell out $169 to buy a compressor if you don't have air tools you meed to run off it, every tool rental place has small compressors you can rent by the day for cheap.

I've never done a front lip but just like G-spec I've painted many other pieces with it and even painted all the custom tins of a Yamaha V Star that won a second place in the gas town bike show. That was 2+ years ago and the bike although rarely ridden still looks great.(sorry no pics).
The paint they mix up is of no lesser quality then what the body shop uses it is infact the same stuff its just thinned out a touch more to flow better from a shitty rattle can and the key to success with it is don't use all the can only use about 3/4 of it and move on so you don't have to drastic a drop in pressure and flow.

Most HVLP guns won't work with small compressor.. and you will screw up your paint due when the pressure drops and the compressor tries to catch up due to small tank size.

For painting, the bigger the tank the more consistent the paint will be.

If you are going to rent.. just rent the booth @ KMS.

Sorry to bump an old thread.

I attempted to paint my front lip. I ended up with the orange peel effect. I'm in the process of sanding it down right now, going with 1500, then finishing with 2000.

I read somewhere that my orange peel might be a result from not pressing the nozzle down hard enough, resulting in too low a pressure, causing the paint to come out in blotches. Should I try again? Or should I go out and buy some better paint?

I'm just using the cheap rattle can stuff from Cdn Tire right now. I'm not super fussed on colour matching because my car is black. The original paint is pearled, but you can't really see it on the front lip, so any black is fine.

i painted the whole bumper on my old car with ctc spray bombs and it turned out really well. Just a matter of doing many super light coats and having a strong finger.

Rims on my current car I used duplicolor graphite and I found that stuff phenomenal. Lays down different than any other spray can that I used...almost like it refused to f up. Highly recommend.

Just used a deck of cards tucked around the rim to protect the tire and went for it.

I'm too far into this project to give up and just get it done professionally. haha.
