Does your company let you drive the work van home?
 

I'm just wondering do many of you guys that work in the service / installation / repair technican that drives the chevy express, gmc savanna etc get to drive the work van home?

Like say if the office is in richmond and you live in vancouver, but the job is all over the lower mainland. It makes no sense driving to richmond, pick up the van then head out? or employers just let you start the day off at home.

that's all depend on the company you work for. Some do and some don't.

Telus does, my dad used to take it home on occassion. But with Telus it's a different story, they have stations where they can pick up a vehicle all over the lower mainland.

Was able to at my last job. They don't let me take the train home at the new job. ;)

I'm allowed to drive my company pick-up home, but in exchange I take a very minor drop in wage to cover the additional fuel costs.

that sucks! would be cool to pull up in a train :)

Mine did on the basis that it was parked in a secure location, such as an underground parking lot or garage, and not out in the middle of the street. reason is obvious: people see a company logo, they assume it has something valuable in it, and theyll smash and grab without regard to car alarms.

so my suggestion to you: only take the vehicle home if you can secure a good spot for it. you cant just offer to pay for the smashed window cause you took the vehicle home - the company incurred greater losses than the window during the time it takes to replace the window.

to illustrate how much of a headache managers would get when a window gets broken because he did you a favour: you show up to work the next day and tell your boss your window got smashed but it's okay you'll pay for it, even if your boss let you pay for the smashed window (which is illegal under the employment standards act), the company is still losing money on having an employee drive the car to the shop, another employee pick him up, now the car isnt making money while its in the shop (instead of being on the road serving customers), 2 employees drive back to the shop, bring the car back. okay now the employee'S can begin work again as scheduled.

Watch out for taxable benefits
 

So for all you guys that take your work vehicle home. Just be careful to watch out for taxable benefits that should hit your T4.

The CRA has a prescribed formula for calculating the taxable benefit and the amounts so calculated are then added to your T4 as income.

To find out more, you can go to the CRA's website and search Employment Benefits. There should be a hit on personal use of company car.

I just got a job with ledcor doing work for telus installs, they let us take the vehicles home and pay for all the gas and repairs. If things get stolen or broken into employees are not held accountable for it either.

Never had a problem with this - I'm dispatched from home (don't have to be in the office every morning or any of that BS) and my van is used ONLY for work-related travel.

if people are going from home to jobsites it shouldn't be taxable. if you are driving from home to an office everyday. then yes.

I currently have one, but it's going to be taken away soon, since we now have more space to park it at work, and more workers then vans. will suck ass to go from home to office, to jobsite, instead of home to jobsite.

I thought most telus vans were stored in there secured lot

yea thats for telus employees, i am employed under ledcor, we do contract work for telus. our trucks say "Authorized provider" i cant wait til i get my truck, we are all getting 2011 silverados!

What do you guys think of gps tracking? Who's got it and who doesn't?

Some company loves it when you drive their company car. the company logo is a great marketing tool for them. My last company was one of the few who first got the smart car and it was the first time it was fully covered with advertising etc. Depending what company you're working for.

Of course, then you really have to drive like a granny - if you're a road douche, everyone know how to get ahold of your employer to complain.

Im with L&B in the the Okanagan Contracting for Telus. Doesnt Ledcor have a 60 day cooling off period before you can be a direct employee of Telus? Are you just phone/optic?

BTW I drive my van home every night. Also when I was working in the kootenays for a few months I was able to use it for personal as well.

we're not direct employees of Telus, We're employees of LEDCOR LTS, we're contractors for telus, our trucks say "authorized Telus service provider" Its 6 weeks training and then you're on your own doing Install/Repairs

Foremen in my company take them home because there is no company parking for them.

I once heard a story about an exforeman who cheated and used the company van to drive everywhere and saved so much money by not having to pay for an additional vehicle. Once he drove to the interior for a wedding and the van broke down. He phoned up the boss and expected him to pay. The boss told him no.
