Internet problems, please Halp

I'm sorry in advance if this gets a tad confusing but I'll try my best to explain what's going on.

A few days ago my Microsoft security essentials started giving me little popups about detecting possible threats, so I'd hit "clean computer" and a few seconds later I'd get another popup saying that the computer was cleaned.

However after this happened my internet would suddenly die on me, and I'd get a message saying something like "the proxy server is refusing connections"

So I'd do a full scan and something very similar to this would be found, quarantined and removed:

"Backdoor: Win32/Cycbot.B"

This went on for a few days so I'm assuming it was never really "cleaned" from my computer.

Fast forward to yesterday and my internet doesnt work at all.

Is a re-install of windows 7 my only savior?

If you think its trojan related then Just do a reformat. Solution in under an hour. Of course trouble shoot the basics too. Ie other computers ok?

if you end up formatting and installing win7.. dont use Microsoft security essentials.... use a 3rd party like Nod32, Bitdefender or even the newer Norton 2011 have been getting good reviews..

+1 for Norton 2011. I've been using it on my new comp and found it pretty solid.

Did you try a different Internet browser?

Did you try doing a virus/malware scan when booting up in Safe Mode?

If the software on your system doesnt really matter I would recommend a reformat.. Its just the best scenario.. Ive had lots of systems come in with no network and viruses.. We would remove the virus and some systems were soo infected that it needed a reload. Make sure all drivers are up to date and you should be good.

Well nothing on there really matters except for pics, the only software on there I'd need is autocad but I've got a cd for that anyway.

Thanks guys, I guess the easiest option is to just reformat

can you connect anything other device to your network?

are you using a router to connect to the ISP modem? if you are, try to connect without using the router

Have you considered system restoring your computer to an earlier time?

I'm assuming this would restore any settings/files up to that date, and void any changes to the system after that date?

Yup. It's pretty quick, give this a try before your last resort, which would be reformatting.

Start -> Programs -> Accesories -> System tools -> System restore. I am using Windows XP, Vista/Win7 should be more/less the same thing. You'll find it.

if your running a router, have you done a reflash or upgrade the firmware on it before?

you can try this..

unplug both isp modem and router, plug in router first, then plug in the isp modem...

or reset the router to factory setting with the hard reset, usually located at the back of the router

I end up spending a ton of time at work lately cleaning out these kind of viruses, since our telus helpdesk is useless. I can probably remotely clean it up for you if you want. check pm.

this used to happen on my windows xp every once in a while

the problem always was my network adapter drivers got taken out.

network adapter is the part of your motherboard where you plug your internet cable into, and a driver is necessary for it to work.
I would highly recommend you go into your Device Manager and check if you got one of those yellow exclamation marks next to your network adapter.

I typically would end up fixing the problem by reinstalling the drivers from my motherboards official webpage download section

Thanks man, but I'm almost positive this is virus related.
I've got a few things to try out when I get home, if those fail I'll probably reformat
