What Should My First Firearm Be?

So, I'm anticipating the arrival of my restricted firearm license. I am planning to use my firearms for target practice only. What should my first firearm ideally be?

My plan is to get a .22 rifle, or something cheap I can shoot all day long and learn about shooting. Later on, I when I learn enough and have enough money, I want to get a real bolt action rifle, like the Remington 700.

I still haven't given up on the idea of WWII firearms, but that will have to wait. I need a core rifle that is affordable enough for start with, so I can shoot for more than 5 mins at the range.

My budget is flexible, but I rather stay under $400 or so. If I spend anymore, I might as well go right to a bolt action with a bigger caliper.

Right now, I'm considering:

1. Ruger 10/22 (variations of)
2. Remington 597
3. SKS
4. CZ 858

Your thoughts? If you have other suggestions I'm open to them.

"on the third day, god invented the Remington 597 so that man could fight the dinosaurs"

SKS.

Have to go with the classics.

gravity gun

Ruger 10/22 would be my pick. This has so many mod options that i think you would not get tired of. I own 2 myself and built them up in different ways and continue to have fun with them.

The gun itself is reliable, cheap and fun to shoot.

SKS. Dirt cheap gun, dirt cheap ammo. Rugged and reliable. You can drop-kick it, run it over with your car and it'll still work. Looks good too.

Non compound Bow and arrow, or maybe a laser tag gun.

get the ruger for your first firearm... then move up from there to more powerfull stuff. the .22 is best for target shooting (and cheapest)

CRS 02-09-2011 06:30 AM

Firing a .22 is like firing an air rifle. Seriously.

I'm sorry buy I couldn't vote,

There was just nothing "gangster" enough on that list for my taste.

Option #5 Should be: "Gloc 45 with serial numbers shaved off"

Supafly 02-09-2011 06:33 AM

i'd say pick up a russian SKS, and when it comes time to, unload it and pick up something a bit more fun with a larger calibre.

Lomac 02-09-2011 06:45 AM

Andrew? Lol.

SKS would be my pick though. Good first gun.

SKS is cheap as hell for ammo and they are actually accurate enough to use for a little deer gun

S&W Model 29, 44 mag with 6 inch barrel. That which does not kill us, makes us stronger. Like shooting a 12 ga Brushmaster, but with no stock. Survive this puppy and you are a real man.
