Vintage Audio in Vancouver?

Helloo!

I am looking to purchase a vintage amp/receiver and a turntable soon and I am wAndering if you guys and gals know of any good vintage audio stores. I stumbled across http://www.iavscanada.com after some digging through the CanuckAudioMart Forums, and there's always Craigslist, but I hope there are more options for me.

TIA!

Zulu Records sells used turntables and stuff, but being such a hipster store it's prolly marked up a bit.

IIRC there's a place in Surrey that sells used electronics. Found it: http://www.iavscanada.com/

Salvation Army occasionally has some gems, but most of em are from the early-mid 90's rather than the nice 80's stuff. Although I have seen some decent stuff there like NAD.

Craigslist is much better than those overall in my experience. What are you looking at getting? Marantz?

The only other option I can think of is to check vintage stores on Main St. I spoke to an owner of a particular vintage shop and he said that it's very hard to find really old stuff (like tube amps) because enthusiasts tend to snatch them up if they appear at garage sales, etc.

Canuck Audio Mart is probably the best play to get vintage, high quality gear. No matter how you intend to buy vintage gear, expect to pay good money for it.

From what I heard on tube amps, and generally anything that's old school (pre 70's) with super nice sound, is to hit all the flea markets, garage sales etc.

You never know what you'll find, but that's the only way you can do it without spending a buttload.

My inlaws have a Curtis Mathes Console stereo with turntable, vintage amp and receiver for sale from 1970.

I thought I added pics, but I guess I forgot, they have pics though.

BTW it's in excellent condition, sound is great, I listened to it a couple days ago before posting it up.

Plus a lot of the cheaper un-restored stuff you'd find on CL and flea markets, you don't know if it'll work properly or not and may require spending some money to get it back to working condition.

My brother used to be a manager at Stereo Pacific on Broadway, waaaaay back in the day. I remember they would buy old equipment as partial payment on new stuff. I can give him a call to see if he saved some old tube amps.

Yeah I'm thinking of getting a vintage (70s) Marantz solid-state receiver/integrated unit. Tube setups seem to cost so much more, regardless of production date, but I'm open to the idea if I can find one on the cheap.

I haven't been having too much luck on the amp front on Craigslist, but I found a Technics turntable for $15 that I think I can fix up. Poster says "hardly used" so I figure it will need a new belt and some oil? If it needs a new cartridge, $15 + whatever the cartridge costs should still be well within my budget.

Any recommendations on such a store? I'm not hipster enough to know these kinds of things x)

Thanks for all the replies, guys!

i bought mine from the vancouver flea market on terminal avenue

to buy records: every so often they have record swap meets with relatively reasonable prices. check craigslist, however most of the records i bought are by word of mouth.

I have a Kenwood receiver (KR-6600) in mint condition and a pair of Large Advents, also mint, that I'm looking to get rid of, if anyone is interested. I just don't have room for them anymore.
