Increasing Chinese immigrants in Vancouver?

I was at Holt Renfrew on Sunday and notice alot of shoppers speak mandarin with mainland accent. Salesperson there are like 70% chinese speakers too.

My noob question is: Since i live in a well and has never been to China. What has changed in China's government struture that allows emmigration and increasing personal economy. I have always been told that money is hard to come by in China and most families are poor. Here in vancouver, I have seen alot of mainlanders that are living well and driving nice cars.

Has China ditches their communist/maoism/socialist...or whatever you call it strategy? or am i just seeing a minority of rich poeple here who has special connections to grow rich and immigrate.

Time for you to start reading something called... the news. China has been a growing economic power for the last decade and just took over the spot as the 2nd largest economy in the world. And besides what you see, most chinese are still shit poor but with a lot more rich people and billionaires than there used to be. Even if 1% of the chinese population were millionaires there would be more millionaires than there is people in Canada. The obvious answer to the visibility of seemingly "rich people" is that rich people are more mobile than poor people, most of the immigration in the last 20 years has been from rich HK, chinese, taiwanese, and korean people.

TheNewGirl 02-15-2011 12:55 PM

I saw those stats the other day too, that there are more millionaires in china than there are people in all of Canada.

China's expected to overtake the US as #1 economic power in the world in the next 10 years.

I know China is a power house in Economy as a nation. So i guess they are not running the old communist government as before which poeple cant have savings of their hard earned money. Like i said, i have no idea regarding politics or world economics

not sure if you're trollin...

murmur 02-15-2011 02:11 PM

troll or not.

canada has one of the most relaxed immigration policies on earth.
compare our immigration system to england and america's, you'd know why so many riches would choose canada.

hk20000 02-15-2011 02:18 PM

What's brilliant about china's economy is that it does not use federal reserve (which is, against all logic, a private bank), so china government has firm control of its currency and lending activities (by controlling the interest rate).

It's for the Canada Line

Gnomes 02-15-2011 02:50 PM

China.... the rich corrupted people flee here. Or, the parents send money to their kids here to spend while the the parents continue milking the corrupted system.

pretty much what others said and im surprised you just noticed. china and russia have realized that they can sell shit and make money from it. russia due to fall of communism, china due to communism with a heavily capitalist attitude. india's next.

That is why I don't get China still claims to be a 3rd world country. They have tons of rich people, their military strength, and economic power is one of the top in the world.

I read something years ago saying like if the country is classfield as 3rd country they get a ton of tax breaks from export goods and so forth. I think is time to change it. I mean when your country have billions of billions of dollars to spend in milliatry I am pretty sure the country isn't that poor and they shouldn't get any tax cuts on their exports.

TRDood 02-15-2011 03:33 PM

There were 2 reasons why Holt Renfrew was super busy last Sunday

1. Promotion - I think redeem 10% of your purchases as a Holts giftcard
Result: Cheap (but rich) Chinese people go all crazy about it. Didn't you see the LV lineup?

2. Money - They can afford that their materialistic desires
Result: Paying cash for the $3000 Chanel bag.

and it was V-Day weekend... duh

van_driver 02-15-2011 03:39 PM

haven't you watched russell peters?

they go in there every single day and buy nothing, then as soon
as the salesperson turns around they take pictures and send to hong kong
to make fakes

The real question is can China become the next consumer market? With the way their government is now I don't think so. Also, regarding your comment on military strength they don't hold a candle next to the US.

Don't say shit about that stealth fighter either, it is not operational and their pilots don't have the combat experience that ameican pilots have. Or you could try to prove me wrong but China still has a way to go. Don't count the US out yet.

at least 30% of the chinese population is poor, that's why they are considered a developing country

they abandoned communism long time ago with Deng

most chinese save money , the opposite of american's tendency to spend, but they spend tons at restaurants and buying a car

I know there were a sale at LV. 10% off a 1000 bag= 100 off. i guess Chinese poeple loves sales :fullofwin:. I saw like 2 white men out of 30 asian faces in that lineup (looked like boxing day all over again)

So is China still under communist governement or not?,, Seems like they are running some kind of modified capitalist structure, its definitely not democracy.
