It's Gonna Get Cold, Son!

It's going to feel like it's about -20°C tonight.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The windchill will make minus nine feel a lot colder this evening. It's expected to feel as cold as minus 20; that record-cold will definitely make you feel the arctic air with every breath you take.

News1130 meteorologist Russ Lacate tells us, "Two factors really heighten the threat of record-cold tonight."

"First off, this deep layer of arctic air could push temperatures down to minus 10 all by itself," he explains. "But the north wind, gusting gale force, will instantaneously evaporate any humidity on your skin, causing your body to lose heat as quickly as it would with an equivilant temperature of 20-below."

Kevin Usselmen with our Calgary station 660News says it's minus 37 with the windchill there today. "We would gladly exchange temperatures with you!" he says. "Actually, in that kind of weather, we run around with t-shirts and shorts on, that would be a balmy day in Calgary."

Sometimes other parts of the country think we should just suck it up. "It is winter, you guys are part of Canada, even though you're on the west coast and you never have to think of winter weather," says Usselmen. "Join the crowd!"

He tells us the best way to cope with the cold is to simply stay indoors and cuddle up with someone you like.

I dunno man -20 is still fucking cold to me since I am so used to Vancouver weather.

Its all about acclimation

Sure if I live in Calgary it would be a warm day but for me my body as adapted to certain ranges of weather and any larger variations would seem drastic, despite the fact that other regional locations experience colder conditions.

This is why people who often come from eastern Canadian get acclimated to the weather here and suddenly are unable to handle weather back east when they visit/move back, well at least for a period of time.

yeah what he said. i used to live in sasketchewan and calgary, so -20 shouldn't be anything for me. however given that i've lived in vancouver for the past 16 years, -20 is fucking cold. it's whatever you're used to. say you lived in hk for the whole 20 years of your life then you moved here, something like -5 would be frigid to you

Close the windows + crank the heat = Northern summer

RevRav 02-24-2011 04:01 PM

I don't mind the -20 weather... but at least give us some snow!

dboy 02-24-2011 04:56 PM

Hope it doesn't snow. I don't want to drive to work in the morning behind a bunch of people without snow tires driving like snails.

Jayhall 02-24-2011 06:13 PM

Theres snow in Washington State, about 30" in my friends driveway. Victoria got hammered to, yet nothing here. I'd prefer -20 rather than -1 or -2. At -20 its a dry cold. -1 is more of a damp cold, chilled right through to the bone. Last time I rode Apex is was -43 without wind chill. Cold, yet bearable. If it does snow I'll be getting paid to do snow removal on a quad with a blade so Im down.
